I have been using Spaldings for consumables etc on and of for years but was wondering if I’m missing someplace better. Any recommendations. Needing a new hydraulic top link just now but always needing the usual blades, pins and wear parts etc. What sites tend to have the best prices on quality stuff?

If you need a hydraulic toplink I can recommend @Dave

I use Amazon for cable ties and many other consumables.

I find it a little frustrating at times how people think that dealers are making a fortune and that direct is the best route...my weekend consisted of picking a machine up from another dealer 2 hours away to fit the timescale it is needed in, sat avo sending a fitter out to a different brand of tractor than we normally support, he then managed to make up a new steel brake pipe then refit and get the customer going at 10 last night, this morning a visit to the depot to put some points out and rob a new machine of some u bolts for a customer and then visit a machine where the customer had managed to calibrate the touch screen (very badly) and couldn’t get the machine to operate, to get him going...
I don’t want patting on the back, but be careful what you wish for when everything is on line or at your 12 depot super dealer.... in my personal opinion!

I owe no one a living, and no one owes me a living, when I sell my produce, I just have to take the price I'm offered. So when I buy things for the farm, I will do my best to find it at the best value for money . Loyalty to a supplier often ends up in being shafted.
I don’t have a problem with that but , and my family farm, and I have worked in the industry for 20 odd years, I’m just saying in my opinion not all dealers are the bad guys, and good service is appreciated by most...certainly not all!

Do you charge the obligatory £20 consumables for every job?

That in my opinion is a rip off.

It's not your business or service that's the problem , it's your overheads with that lovely site in Shrewsbury , you can't compete with a man in his garage

The whole parts system needs a massive shake up, most of us are well able to go online, and find the part we need. Who's got the time to drive 40 miles, to try and explain to some times a halfwit of a storeman, only to be told it's not something we keep in stock and you'll have to collect it from here in two days time.
I can't for the life of me understand why the main after market parts suppliers can't just sell at the trade price to all end users. They have the ability to box and send parts to any address, all they need is to set up direct online payment.

Without a doubt, rates etc are a killer, but will the franchises we have deal with us with a depot in the middle of no where, can you recruit the staff unless you’ve got a half decent place for them to work? ...and if you know how we come into the business I guess you know that the site was built by Ravenhill, and was bought off them (not by me) as we did not buy the business, merely tried to keep some of it...
I’m sure that I could/have early more money working for someone else but like most farmers...am slightly sadistic and like working for not a massive return! And it’s generally a great industry to work in!
