Various firms are offering free advice with DEFRA backing.
AHDB
Promar
Kite
ADAS
etc

Any recommendations for the collective?

Does it not depend what the question you want answering is? Else it might be like asking a dentist to give advice on a broken toe, they can probably give you some relevant advice but they may not be the ones to give you the best advice.....

I have seen this offer but am stuck at the stage of not knowing what question I want answered. Its not really free, we are paying for it from the cuts to BPS, money moving away from direct payments to farmers to new greedy pig snouts with heads in the trough

They will just take the money from the govt and give you the answer to a different question that they can answer without any effort. Each report probably worth £2k, but almost all filled with identical photocopied sheets, a few details about your farm but I doubt there will be any golden nuggets to capitalise upon.

Why make the effort if you get paid as much for a good report as a waffly one….especially you can churn out twice as many identical and waffly ones each day?

Bit of scepticism about the scheme then.

Maybe pick one of the more obscure companies and see what happens?

They are all contracted to do the same thing. But targeted at different audiences - or at least that is the theory. This ranges from reading you the material that is on offer to sitting with you and explaining how the BPS taper works.

The main problem is I'm yet to hear anyone who has any better advice than you will get from speaking to other farmers who are actually involved in things. My bet is you will know more than them @Sid so please feed back what happens.

It's cost Defra £1000 a head, AHDB have £3.9m, so might as well get some use out of their calculator though.

I’ve got someone coming out in November, it’s about something completely different that I want to look into but using the FRF I get them on site and there time and advice for free. Yes they have to go through a couple of forms with us first but may as well get my moneys worth out of the scheme.

WE did this on the pilot last year - AHDB posted on here last year looking for participants.

For the time involved it wa a useful exercise that looked at the profitability of our business and the sectors within it. The figures were a snapshot that bore little relevance to reality without understanding what had occurred in the previous 3-4 years (large amount of growth and investment) - but it did focus me to look at the figures to prove why they werent that representative of the actual situation. Combined with the BPS calculator and how it affected our business going forward, I thought it was useful - but as always, the real winners in these exercises are the consultants that deliver the proect!!

Any recommendations for advice on diversification / development opportunities? (North Yorkshire)

I share the general scepticism about this scheme but at the same time feel the consultants will be cashing in regardless of uptake so may as well try and get something out of it?

just had a read through, thinking that as it was free I might utilise the facility again now the proect has been launched. On the pilot, the work was carried out by a lady from AHDB (who was very good) - now the work will be carried out by a firm of appointed consultants. Looking at the list of consultants available, (with the exception of Liz Genever, who I rate highly) I decided not to apply as I didnt want to be responsible for them getting any richer.

update: AHDB rang this morning as I had apparently applied (thought I had not sent the email). I explained that I did not want to furher line the coffers of consultants (see above) and was then offered to have the review conducted by an AHDB team member. That info wasnt on the application.
Just thought I would put that out there in case anyone felt the same as me about consultants but wanted to make use of the free review.
I took the opportunity to inform them that whilst I am supportive of AHDB, I am not happy at their support of RT - the lady I spoke to was aware of the issue so I wasnt the first to mention it perhaps

Had our "assessment" done.

Was definitely a useful process.

Preliminary advice on the day is that Social (people) and climate (climate change) were where we are lacking resilience.

Waiting on the full report .

Rest of business scored very well
