I can't help thinking they ought to be selling posts that don't rot, but i guess thats not in their interests.

It's the future, as well as using joist hangers, as notching the post would void the warranty :sneaky:

I'm old enough to remember when you could always pick up a chrome car hub cap on the side of the road for this purpose!
yep, been there done and a plastic roofing washer and nail secured it unless it was a tight enough fit to stay on ...

i do wonder why anyone would use wood at all tho tbh.,certainly doesn't make economic sense thats fer sure.on the other hand it might for a contractor who doesn't supply but no sound workman likes to see their good work fall over in not a very long time,or a short while even.(n)

An interesting question if you DONT fit these caps will it make the "warranty" invalid,
Not that one would ever doubt the integrity of honesty of the manufacturer to honour such warranties

We have a few gateposts, probably 20-30 years old rotting from the top. As the bases are embedded in concrete  I don't want to replace them. Is there anything I can do to stop or slow the rot, filler etc ? They are CAA tanalised at a guess.

Might be best cutting them back to where they're solid and splicing on new. 20 years isn't bad going really, only telegraph poles seem to last longer.

I've started capping the top of timber gate posts with concrete or a sand and cement mix. I secure a bit of wire mesh to the top to hold the concrete and I create a bit of a dome on top that will hopefully shed the water.
