fiddled about with all sorts of 'portable' fencers, we now have 4 big mains fencers, each overkill on parts of the farm, and run 'hot' HT wire out, if they go through the fence now, you see the reason, usually a dead short, or, as we turned a bull out, he went through two fences, for all the 'hassle' we have had over the years, or, all the money we have spent on fencers etc, its well worth the effort.

I’m afraid this is away land with no power source.

You have watered the earth well?
Good point. Years ago, during a prolonged dry spell, we were getting electric shocks from the water taps on the kitchen sink. Phoned the Sparky, his suggestion of tip a few buckets of water on the mains fencer earth was the solution.

we are lucky, we have a power line going to our borehole, which is away from the farm, and similar to the dirty water system, so power there, 1 from farm, and 1 from house, which again is not on farm.
Mentioned above, is a 'better' wire, we use this, but get it from 'voss' on the net, ki-wi kit, is quite expensive, it carries the shock much better, it costs just under £60 for 1000 metres, we will never go back to the 'normal' wire, just as we will never go back to ordinary reels, the geared ones are so much easier, again on the net, not voss, 4 geared 3-1 reels, delivered £72.60.

Our highest power one is a voss 10joule one, good clean wire and earth into moist ground and he will kick out 12.5 kv..

At least a 60w Solar panel mounted on top of an ibc and big 100 plus ah liesurebattery and appropriatecharge controller mounted on top ( ebay or amazon)
Use good quality big diameter white poly so theyve best chance to see it

Yep, DIY will be a lot cheaper than the integrated units. Big ass fencer from Voss.... 160 quid? Solar kit, 50 quid. Battery... free off an old combine! The panel sizing is important as BtT says.

At that price, it will want sticking on the top of a 7m pole, out of range of the travelling fraternity and others!!
We’re obviously too honest for our own good here, never had any trouble ever, mind you I do tend to hide fencers out of sight at the top of the field.

The problem with teh integrated energiser/PV units, is that they do need to be out in the sunlight, South facing to get the best from them.

We have been fairly lucky here, but my neighbour has lost a lot and batteries as well. I told him to bring them down, and we will engrave postcodes on them... ;)

Can you not buy a Unigizer and run if from a panel?

We have a couple 705s we’re looking to sell as now have the heifers on mains, have had 9kva off them this week on short runs! Ours have been a bit challenging recently to

bloody well knew you would want to know !
aimtoolsltd
item no: 16-05089-31481
heavy duty reel, winding 3-1
cost, £68.36 for 4 including vat, and delivery,
gave me something to do, going back to find the info. I just put geared electric fence reels, in e'bay !
not the heaviest of duty reels, but at the price absolutely fine, similar on voss, x3 for £75 ish.
good luck ! I think they dropped in price for 4.
But, it does show what you can get, at better prices, of the net, it pays to shop around.

??Thanks for that.

Currently using a very good (but too expensive, really) Gallacher one and some awful non-geared Rutland ones we've got for sheep.
