Firewood orders gone very quiet cos everyone else is doing it

Didn't I hear about some new law prohibiting the sale of undried wood? Something to do with reducing pollution. But I may have imagined it.

Firewood is a mugs game. Too many young lads with a pickup and chainsaw that will do it for some beer money.

Only if you get dragged down to there level. They do a bag or 2 here and there don’t always have logs in stock usually damp so don’t worry about them.

There is but I’ve yet to hear the full rules and how they are going to police it .
There is talk if you sell over a certain amount you can sell un seasoned logs

Its true and sensible really. They are stopping the sale of "ready to burn" firewood over a certain moisture content. Possibly 20%?
Sure you can still sell it as "unseasoned " if you state that on the invoice.

The trick of the firewood game I am told is to be give the timber by the tree surgeon guys or chop up trees around the place for people and take them away. The firewood sale is then a bonus and nearly every farm must own a chainsaw.

The other trick is dont try and compete with the cheap suppliers.
Most people want a good, reliable supply of quality dry logs supplied when they need them. They wont even consider other suppliers if they have that service.

I don’t think the definitive issue of the new regs has been published yet.

I sell quite a few in summer. They use them for firepits in the garden apparently

Did quite a few bags/loads last week and just got an order for a bag this evening. Better stacking logs in the dry warm weather than p!ss wet winter day.
A good few like to stock up with logs to dry them themselves

October: Havent bothered cutting firewood. Had a few inquires but decided not to bother the demand is low. The investment in improving the equipment and lack of space when the animals are in. Stress of cutting and bagging in the evenings. Not worth it in the end. Like any diverisfication it needs to be done with a good investment and numbers. Around here every day another person is selling firewood on the local selling pages. Where we won was on small pieces (8-10"). Going out in the landrover with 1m3 is eating up profits on fuel useage even though we only did 8 miles (16 miles round trip) arranging around peoples times couldnt always do 2 - 3m at a time. Majority of people only want 1m due to space and cost. Did it for nearly 10 years at first very busy great demand now I would advise people to be wary of investing in cutting equipment as the return is going to be in 2 yrs time if lucky.

Hopefully the new rules will get rid of some of the cowboys but I doubt it as there is no one to enforce it. Still see tonne bags of logs advertised which if dry would only be 250kg.
