First stool signifcance.

Looking for info on causes of first stool being solid and dark, sometimes causing pain passing and seeming to happen at first suckle? Meconium I know is usually orange, just like to understand the causes of above.

Lamb meconium is black, the orangey yellow stuff that comes next and sticks to everything is the colostrum going through.

No. it is almost always black. But if a calf you are helping to suck hasn't passed, it helps if you stimulate the underside of the tail head - to emulate the mother licking it.

But a number of lambs pass it before they are born, and they can be born with a yellow sheen. When it happens in Blackface lambs, some folk think it is caused by the tups having been bloom dipped.

Yep, makes sense now I think about it. Always thought the orange dung was meconium because it can come so soon after the calf is born.
