Fodder beet at 300mm spacing

Just a passing conversation with someone wanting to plant beet, he'd like to try row spacings as close as possible to 300mm.

I'm wondering if I could use the precision drill set for maize (750mm) and drill it twice, nudging the GPS over for the second pass between the rows.

It would be grazed over winter.

My concern is driving over the first pass and compacting it. Would this be an issue?

Certainly wouldn’t do it any good…but if you think about it; you drive over the headland drilled rows while turning to do your long work and it never bothers it does it 🤷‍♂️

Local contractors built their own to do it at 350mm spacing as a large customer wanted it after studying Kiwis doing it for grazing. Is it likely to be worth going down that route long term?

Don’t think so if it’s dry enough

I assume at 300x 300 the canopy would possibly smother weeds quicker. Wonder why 500 (or 20inches) is the standard? I assume to allow a tractor to drive between rows?
