Fodder beet storage

We've grown some beet for the first time this year & lifted 4 rows on Monday

So far so good, but at this time of year on our land it could soon get too wet to get near it with the harvester, so I would like to lift all of it

If we do, what is the best storage method ?

An old boy told me in a bale sided clamp & put soil & straw on top, straw is easy with a spread a bale, but soil will be harder

Bale clamp is fine, leave it uncovered until/if some hard weather comes, haven’t covered ours for years as we haven’t had hard enough weather.

Get it level on top, we use the grain pusher, I don’t like stacking much deeper than 8ft as it can heat up

I'd say about the size of a calf's head, some are rugby ball size but if we let them get too big could they be too big for the lifter ?

I daren't leave them 'til late October as it could be too wet
I honestly don’t know anything about growing it but we use a bit here. We use a load every 10 days or so and the lads that grow it aren’t keen of lifting any in September as the crops don’t yield enough for the cost of growing it. Sometimes they will lift it in the early spring if the ground has been too wet in the winter. I suppose it depends what else you are wanting to grow really
