You need to actually read the post I was responding to.

I didn't say that its impossible to cook on a hotplate. The post I was responding to suggested that people only didn't buy "proper" cookers because they'd spent all their money on massive tellies and fags.
No it didn't

BMI and therefore weight is is a pretty blunt measurement in reality

18 months ago my BMI was 25 with weight at 85kgs and body fat % of 25% i was not unfit (I could complete triathlons and was mountain biking every now and then but not regular exercise and my diet was whatever I wanted to eat and not ideal - I felt like age was creeping up on me however, lacked energy and didn't feel fit as I felt I should or used to be

today i’m the same weight and BMI but my fat % is just 17-18 %. - this reflects regular gym, better diet and more cardio fitness - i’m much fitter today than i was 2 years ago yet my weight and BMI are no different. I make an hour a day for the gym, I'm busy but you can always make time if you really want to, doing so has made a massive difference to how I feel, my energy levels, my mental health, my sleep and pretty much every aspect of life, the hours spent in the gym is more than paid back in how much more I get done when I do work and how much more energy I have means a longer day. I started off not wanting to go to the gym if honest but now if I miss it I feel out of sorts almost instantly, exercise is addictive !

Food is a massive part of all this, I never ate breakfast until 2 years ago, just coffee, I often skipped lunch when busy and then ate a lot of carbohydrates later in the day as I felt hungry, my total Kcal intake was not massive but its was often all the wrong macros. I now eat breakfast religiously each day and make sure I get at least 80g of protein before lunch and 150-180g per day total. I don't restrict Kcal but don't need to, when your Kcal intake is made up of mostly good Kcal's vs empty ones its actually hard to eat enough each day ! I only drink socially and won't touch fast or junk food anymore I see both as drugs now that maybe can be enjoyed VERY occasionally but are not something I crave. I gave up tea and Coffee for a while and the effect was notable, caffeine is a drug ...... I did decide I missed coffee however so drink it again now but only before lunchtime any later and it affects sleep

If I looked at weight and BMI alone nothing has changed but in reality the change is massive to my body composition and health - if you want a marker body fat % / lean mass % s the best metric to use, it truly reflects the state of your body, diet and exercise

Atv's have made farmers and workers fatter and theres far less manual work nowadays even hand tools are replaced by cordless ie spinning off big nuts :sneaky: use far less calories with wrench /spanner /socket than using a millwacky cracky

I think so, in a arable situation its amazing how little you need to leave the cab these days which is great from a safety and productivity point of view but maybe not good for the waistline !

Considering what a physical job its supposed to be Im amazed by how overweight many farmers seem to be ? you would think its a job almost guaranteed to keep you fit
sadly so many farmers are still eating the same diet their fathers and grandfathers did when they followed the plough, just don't need it with DD so they? ;)
seriously my weight when I was dairy farming used to balloon during the winter then hay and bale cart would drop me a couple of stone, today I prefer to keep it a bit stable through the year

Tends to be a very highly Carb based diet as well - I don't think my father could eat a meal that didn't have bread or potato with it

Are you saying that Grandad s diet was unhealthy, would not be much over processed food then ,

I bet his diet was very healthy, I am guessing smoking was more of a problem then, but as we have given up smoking, we have started eating a much poorer diet, and taking less exercise too (thankfully farm work has been mechanised!)

Good for the cereal farmer though. A change in the populations diet will have an affect on the profitably of crops grown. More meat and veg and less cereal products isn't a good mix for big arable farms

meat needs cereals / legumes

no matter which way diets shift in the future people still need the same Kcal's and population is growing - I don't know what as farmers we get so concerned about vegans /. meat substitute products etc ? they are still food and still need Kcal production of some sort to supply them

But can you direct drill carrots and sell carbon credits on the same crop?

I've never had my body fat measured (although it will be one of the suite of measures I get done soon) but I suspect it's fairly low.

Fat floats but muscle doesn't. I've never been able to float in a swimming pool without moving. I can sink just by staying absolutely still and breathing out.

Until they start growing them in the lab like they’re trying to do with tumour products, unsuccessfully thankfully so far. They’ll use the same laughable justification and logic.

How many arable farmers do any real manual work these days?

Many livestock folk do most of it from a tractor or forklift seat too now.....
son worked a summer as a bricklayers labourer, and for the first two weeks, he was shattered, almost came in from work and conked out, he said it was much harder work than farm work, because you have days on the tractor or quad bike which is not physically tiring (well not as tiring as stacking out!)

no need to measure body fat, just measure your circumference round the biggest bit in the middle (usually by the navel), ideally it should be half your height, and as a maximum 37" and it's not trouser waist size!
