If the herd was TB tested, the milk could be sold as 'Accredited'. The bonus was 3p / gallon.
Pasteurisation came in at about the same time for dairies though, I thought.
Accredited TB free, can't have been long after the war as Dad used to say about the ex German POW's doing the fencing for it, think it had to be six foot high

Neighbouring farms Fences had to be at least 6 feet apart so farm was double ring fenced.
I remember my father complaining that neighbour just thought he could now give up on his fencing duties.
Luckily much of our boundary had double hedge and double ditch.
Our neighbour that side used to import a lot of Irish stores which were notorious for carrying TB but we never had a breakdown in the 40 years we milked there. Would not be so happy today though

I remember at Northampton market, there used to be a building where all reactors hadbto be sold across the other side of the car park
Big sign over the top non accredited.
By the late 1960’s it was no longer in use as there were no cattle for it so it became for a while the brucelllosis accredited section

Yes. Our first herd sign had 'TT tested' on it. Gawd, I feel old now.

West Hatch and also Secret World - home of the fragrant Pauline Kidner. I believe there's another RSPCA holding pen near St. Columb in Cornwall.
Secret world, I had a good friend that was quite involved with that, had to change the subject quick if badgers came up or it may have ended the friendship, they did have the ear of a few with some power

I knew 6 foot come in to it somewhere, local bigish farm fenced for it, Dad said the German that worked there would drive stakes all day with a sledge and hardly stop

Badger 'rescue centres'.

3p gallon was a lot of money in the forties when a ten pound note covered all the weekly wages
My grandfathers place was ideal as it was surrounded by roads so no need to double fence..
He said it was a goldmine
