Getting some FYM spread

Not had the chance to spread any decent amount over the last couple of years so we've got some fair piles about the farm..... we don't own a spreader but we hire one which as you all know isn't ideal as it's never about at the right time.

I was thinking the silage grass seems slow to get going so perhaps I could get some of the older stuff spread maybe. How late do others get it on? We don't rake first cut so we might get away with it.

I had some well rotted muck spread December the third on some grass leys, the odd bit is still there now and I wouldn’t silage it even now. It was very well spread to and not big clumps everywhere. Find a sacrifice field that needs resowing and slam it on there before ploughing.

We've got pretty close 1000 tonne knocking about in 7 lumps of varying sizes...... could really Do with getting some on but I get your point with it being a bit late though.

Did some a couple of times recently, but none this year as the land was too wet! ;)

Well rotted and spread with a lightweight rotary quite thickly in late Feb, then through with an Einbock as soon as it was dry enough.

Aerated, then harrowed again, then rolled.

8-9 weeks later I mowed with a drum mower with a long top link and spacers in the saucer. Pretty pleased to be honest, tiny amount of fibre residues by baling time! Great crop.

BUT as other said, needs spreading early... really early! Waay too late now for conservation land i'd have thought?

I bought a cheap basic rotary for exactly the reason you highlight, Timing!

We spread well rotted fym on silage ground end of april every year, chopper comes mid to late June doing first cut. still traces of it on ground when cutting but always aim for dry silage so never caused us any problems

Ideally we would get it out after silage but mid July we have 1000 lambs to wean on aftermath and store cattle come home to better grazing. How do people find grazing after spreading on post harvest ground?

Did it last year on a couple of fields. Worked well for a couple of reasons it gave the grass and soil a good feed after having a lot taken out of it by the silage and also stopped me putting the cattle in there too quickly to give the grass more chance to recover. It was grazed about 6-8 weeks later from memory.

I spread some last week on leys we do it most years we just use our bunning it has vertical augers but ones for spreading digestate/compost. We have rolled it now to roll Muck to below mower and roll the odd stone in. We merge the silage not rake a rake would be a disaster

Would it be best to spread at the back end of the year for silage/ hay fields then just put some fert (N) on March/April time ? For hay cut in June July ??

I’ve never used it on grassland as I put it all on the arable ground. What would be the optimal date to put it on? October- November for silage in may?
