Grain fan humidity controller

Can I put an off the shelf in-line humidity plug or a temperature controller probe on my grain store fans and expect to have any positive result in terms of fan efficiency and cooling when it needs to?

it could work but you will have to work out when the air is too damp to dry the grain

The air in the tunnel is measured on my system from tryac

generally the rh in the tunnel is dryer than the air going in due to the action of the fan blades and heat from the motor

I also have a rh controlled burner so when we fill a shed we blow constantly till it is dry
Drying is much quicker when the air temperature is higher and it time for the air to start drying if the fan is only operated during dry parts of the day
Generally the air needs no heat to dry grain from 10 am till late evening

I’ve seen a really neat little system on a underfloor grain shed with a fan that kicked in at the correct temp/humidity. It had a ‘drying’ and ‘cooling’ setting using ambient air.
Then it also was connected into a biomass boiler which automatically sent heat if the ambient heat wasn’t sufficient to dry. Problem is I can’t remember the name of it but it was just some temp probes and a couple of controllers. It was so simple yet brilliant at the same time.

Sounds like Barn Owl from Martin Lishman, originally my design. Also did biomass boiler controls until Dragon went bust and failed to pay me for our work.

Yes, and it's well worth investing in IMO. If you buy a 13 amp one you'd need to set up a relay circuit to start/stop your drying/cooling fans. Electronic humidity controllers do go out of calibration quickly, so get one of these to keep it calibrated. I have one alongside my Robydome AVC 300 which is set up for cooling as well as drying. For the best efficiency you need a temperature differential controller for cooling;

And this little beauty coupled to a timer switch controls my two 40hp fans.
The starter boxes had auto function on them, and indeed I had controllers which worked, right up until a lightning strike.
Went away for repair, never worked properly again so binned them and set about making this setup work.
And the whole lot cost approximately half of the annual recalibration of the sensors.
It's all calibratable, just need thermometer and hygrometer.
Replacement sensors couple quid.
Replacement controller less than twenty quid, timer thirty quid.
Gonna get a spare controller, got couple sensors.
Bingo, no more arguing that it's not working as it used to.
