Have a temporary grass with docks, would like to spray with Glyphosate, silage then direct drill with Kale.

Any recommendations? Is it a successful method to get rid of docks? What rate of glyphosate should be used? What timing for best translocation into docks?

Any other advice welcome.Tia

just thought it might be an opportunity to nobble the docks in a growing crop before a reseed next spring. I can certainly see issues with timing and volume of chemical to deal with the volume of root mass.

You can try I guess. When will you finish grazing off the kale?

An alternative would be to hit them in the new ley next spring.

Takes bloody ages to get the Glyphosate to work properly with Docks IME.... How soon do you anticipate mowing after spraying...?

Docks a problem not really been tackled for a while, been mainly clover/ ryegrass mix. 2 to 3 cuts the sheep grazing.

Liked the idea of direct drilling Kale in or fodder rape as apposed to ploughing and plough and reseed in spring with new ley.

If you go the glyphosate/mowing route, you will be wanting to mow at/soon after 5 days post spraying, for the sake of the grass/silage quality. That will certainly clobber a lot of the docks, but presumably there will be a good seed bank too, so another glyphosate after grazing/recovery might be needed, and there will likely be seedlings emerging in the new ley too.:(

But if direct drilling the kale and then direct drilling the grass reseed, the amount of weed seeds disturbed is minimised ?

Might out winter suckler cows so plough probably needed.
Might silage then plough and kale. Plough again in spring and deal with docks then.
But trying to look at all options. Just thought kale or fodder rape would be enough of a break before grass again.

Everyone has different circumstances and climate.
We graze or mow problem fields, then Roundup, then plough, then back to grass. We struggled with growth post germination in 2018 but generally we get enough rain to make it work. We can’t make DD and these short term break crops work for us.
Others are more successful, and local knowledge from your seed supplier could help you decide.
