First time drilling grass with a combi drill this year and wondering what's best to do? cross drill it or just lift the coulters up and let the following harrow do the work?

If it's a box drill particularly, or an air drill on a power harrow, be conscious of the fact the vibration from the harrow can cause grass seed to bridge and not flow properly. My only way around it has been to put a 2ac pack in at a time and ensure it emptied correctly. Remove all Coulter pressure and all following harrow pressure and you'll he fine. If the following harrow happens to gather the stubble up you'll get some very big skylark plots. Coulters can block very easily on grass and be a long while to spot, so be conscious of that too. Best of luck!

I worried about that first time I did it, but never a problem. PH is only tickling top of ground that has been flat rolled, in order to even out wheelings and make inch of loose tilth.

Cross drill at half rate with a kuhn/accord here, first pass coulters as loose as they'll go, second pass even higher again with the harrow and coulters just tickling the ground. Seed buried around 1" depth, maybe a bit deep but the emergence is spot on.

This was into ploughed ground. It’s come on a fair bit since I took that.

this was straight into a worn out lely. Grazed hard before going straight in with the combi drill.

I prefer broadcasting grass seed then rolling in. Used our amazone combine drill to sow westerwolds....not spaced out even enough for me. Had good results this year with our ATV pulled vicon varispreader....fast too
