Good morning,
slight novice at trailer ploughing and western area on Saturday is on grass,
marking out yesterday someone said no need to do an opening split but do a ley start,
can someone point me in the right direction?
i don’t want to make a mess as the conditions look perfect.
kind regards.

start by putting your sighting poles up as normal for opening, tip your plough over and set the depth so that your rear point/share makes a slight scrape in the turf enough just so it makes a marker for the tractor wheels to follow, ideally make a plate to fix on the share that acts as a miniature mouldboard so the turf can throw off straightaway without going up the main mouldboard ,when you have completed the first run turn around and put the inside of the front wheel to the outside of that first scrap that's your guide for the second trip, the distance between the 2 scraps are important its depending what width furrows you plough with if its 10-to 10.5 the distance needs to be approx. 22-24 inches, haven,t used a trailer plough before ,but you would need to move it over on the the drawbar plate I presume .you are allowed to tidy up the turf after you have finished the scraps. when your ready to to do your crown just run the front wheel using the scraps as a guide to pull two furrows down one side turn around and do the same back down the other side , the rest is as stubble ploughing 12 furrow start. hope that helps .

Why should the turf be thrown off straight away? Have you a photo of the share or split?
