Gravel Type for a track

Hi
I am dealing with an existing farm track that needs upgraded for heavy non farm traffic, occasional use. There’s cattle in the field, farm is in South Wales.

I don’t want cows getting lame using the wrong stone , any suggestions as to what type of gravel I should use please.

I put about 700 tons of road planings on the farm lane, great job, however, I have read that they are not suitable for cow tracks, as the cows will become lame.

Underlying stone on the farm here is shale, but it is a soft shale, great for fill, but heavy use and it turns to mud. Good in field gateways and obviously it's free just to dig up but a disaster on a road that is used more than just very occasionally.

Any quarries locally?
Or any farm stone (shale) available?
