I’ve some gs4 grass ley to go in for the first time. We have always had highly productive Italian ryegrass usually put 86kg of N on per cut. Looking at all the gs4 mixes they all have grasses that are less reliant on N and lower yielding.
my questions are can I buy straights and mix them myself and could I use higher yielding grasses alongside the legumes and herbs as I’m planning to put muck on every cut I can in the region of 12 tons/ha which according to the rb209 should be 72 ish kg of N in that.
also could we graze the herbs in the winter like we do the ryegrass now

As long as the GS4 mix adheres to the recommended prescription laid down by Defra you can have any grass you desire.

It would be probably easiest to have a mix put together, it's no more money than buying your own straights & mixing.
Kevin I was going to ring you next week. Do you have suppliers that will mix grasses to my spec? Am I being foolish expecting to get gs4 mix yielding what a ryegrass ley will? Will the muck stop the clover fixing nitrogen?

I can get mostly anything mixed, we mixed large & small seeds separately for a Stewardship mixture last year so they could be sown a different depths!

Call me next week & we can discuss the other questions, it could turn into a rather large essay.
