After 55 years of pedigree Holstein breeding, a ridiculous rent increase, 6 years of pee poor milk price from first milk enough was enough!
So tomorrow night I will milk my cows for the last time and load them into a wagon on Monday morning for pastures New. Craven cattle market, skipton. Hopefully trade will still be flying.
Toughest decision I have ever had to make and doubt anything in the future will come close. So onwards and upwards.

Dad made that desision in 1995 against all the advice from the professionals. Single best decision he ever made although milk quota price helped

Father in law always said remember * nothing is forever* having reached 75 and finaly retired it is possible to remember with a degree of contentment both times good and bad in a farming life.Try to speak to as many contemporaries as possible their experiences will give you insight into the endless different avenues open. Tomorrow is another welcome if different day,

Best of luck.

Been there I wish you best of luck, the best decision I ever made, and the only one I regret.

Thank you for the well wishes and positive comments on the cows.
It's been a tough day today, but everything in place for the sale, felt a bit surreal milking tonight for the last time.
Dad came here with nothing and built the herd from scratch, so I have continued with his legacy the best I could. But time for a change. I'll leave the farm in March and see where the next part of my life goes, doubt it will be milking cows tho, but never say never!! There's not many people go back once out of it.

Thanks again, don't think I know anybody on here, but if anyone is in skipton tomorrow come and say hello.(y)

So lovely to see a smashing herd able to boast a great health status, a credit to you @howit and hope it all goes well today, another abreast parlour bites the dust! Good luck going forward.
Thank you, cows sold well in general, a few went too cheap but that's the nature of the beast, be some good cheap milk for them.
Feels lifeless on the farm today, it'll take some getting used to!

Good luck for the future. We sold our herd in February to allow the partnership to split apart from a few stale or lame cows and it is incredibly hard. I cried for a week at losing our best Ayrshire genetics. We had the luxury of coming home to cows still in the shed and despite being the problem ones we really cherished them. The good prices balance out the bad prices but I do understand as my husband still misses the good old cows that gave a lot of milk but were back in calf. We are a wee bit different as we are still milking 40. Low milk prices have a lot to answer for. Your herd catalogue looked great. Take some time off as you will need it.
