Haunted Land Rover?

Happens to my Freelander all the time. Nobody knows why it just goes off at random whenever it feels like it.

Luckily after about ten or fifteen seconds it stops of its own accord, when the scousers have cut the wires.
Anyway they soon bring it back when the rats pop their heads out of the dashboard where the air vents used to be: and then it will go off again the next day when the wife has parked up at Sainsbury's.

Battery on one key fob was a bit over 3v and 2.8v on the other. (The key fob battery should be 3v). So changed the lower battery for a new one.

Also took out all the door sensors, cleaned up the contacts (one was a bit loose), and interior light goes on when any door is opened as it should.

Now seems to be fixed. But I read that the battery that powers the thing that makes the noise is re-chargable and is normally re-charged from the main battery when the vehicle is running. That battery will eventually fail with age and needs to be replaced. IF I haven't cured the problem, that's the next step. Apparently it is behind the near side headlight and accessed by removing the head light assembly.

Thanks for all the suggestions. If the problem persists, I shall work my way through them, one at a time.

There is a fair difference between the Range Rover alarm/key fob set up to a Defender especially of a 2005 vintage. These are still using the 10AS alarm from previous models and are fairly basic to those found on newer models. Yes the key fob batteries are the main cause of problems with erratic behaviour along with the door plunger/switches and then those that are also fitted with the interior barometric sensor can cause problems as they can get damp as they're often up in the roof lining and can be affected by condensation and damp. With the central locking being controlled by the fob there is a sequence where you can double press the lock button to lock with or without the interior sensor activated, this is where you can be able to lock the vehicle alarmed if the doors or bonnet are opened but leave your dog in the motor without setting the alarm off.
To increase the range of your key fob there is a mod where you extend the alarm aerial wire from the 10AS module up the door pillar into under the roof lining. Really simple modification and can be quite successful.

Is there a micro switch on the bonnet latch?

My discovery did the same thing, grease gets in to the switch and it loses contact

None on the bonnet.

I forgot to say, a couple of weeks ago I came out to find the main battery quite dead. Charged it up and no problem until yesterday, so probably the same source. If a micro switch was making a bad contact, the LR would think a door was open, so leave the inside light on?

The bonnet microswitch on my Disco needs about a minute to reset if the bonnet has just been closed. My alarm has gone off in the past at random on very warm nights and as the car is in a garage with security lights which haven't come on, I assume it's a temperature thing (though why doesn't it come on in the day ?). We have loads of bats and badgers around at night, can't think that they would set it off though.
There wasn't an alarm fitted to my old 2 door Rangie so I bought one of those Nightstick steering wheel clamps that have something like a 110dB alarm fitted. The thing would go off at will on the coldest or warmest night of the year and as we were living in row of terraced houses meant rushing out in my dressing gown to turn it off. I learnt after I had bought it from a chap who used to test them for the market that they had no temperature compensation fitted and "yes, they would do that !"

I did a quick fix, pulled the connector and bridged the wires until I cleaned out the micro switch.

The bridge wire is still in there after 3 years

When I Googled this problem, lots of threads came up about the Disco bonnet sensor. I had to Google "Defender" specifically to find the Defender problem. As has been said, it seems to be something Discoes do!

re my earlier post, son was called out again at 4am:( to an audi this time. alarm going off, flat battery again.presumably due to covid lockdown and cars not being used. the flat batteries are the car batteries not the keyfob ones.
