I had an erratic alarm in a car once when the battery was close to the end of its useful life. I don't know why, but a fresh battery seemed to cure it.
it’s this. ^^^^

Is there a micro switch on the bonnet latch?
My discovery did the same thing, grease gets in to the switch and it loses contact

The bonnet microswitch on my Disco needs about a minute to reset if the bonnet has just been closed. My alarm has gone off in the past at random on very warm nights and as the car is in a garage with security lights which haven't come on, I assume it's a temperature thing (though why doesn't it come on in the day ?). We have loads of bats and badgers around at night, can't think that they would set it off though.
There wasn't an alarm fitted to my old 2 door Rangie so I bought one of those Nightstick steering wheel clamps that have something like a 110dB alarm fitted. The thing would go off at will on the coldest or warmest night of the year and as we were living in row of terraced houses meant rushing out in my dressing gown to turn it off. I learnt after I had bought it from a chap who used to test them for the market that they had no temperature compensation fitted and "yes, they would do that !"
its the same switch defender owners just don't moan as much as disco ownersWhen I Googled this problem, lots of threads came up about the Disco bonnet sensor. I had to Google "Defender" specifically to find the Defender problem. As has been said, it seems to be something Discoes do!
