Been some hay made in the last week , fields down and baled everywhere , will have sorted the deficit of last spring out , One advantage is most will be decent stuff , now stalks are older you wont get so much sweating in the stacks giving dust and mould

Managed to dodge the torrential rain yesterday, it missed us fortunately by about a mile. The big black clouds building didn’t do my blood pressure any good.

Very lucky here too. I could see the black clouds tracking there way the other side of Tonbridge.

The wind blew like hell for 10 minutes which made a real mess of the rows. With the rake still in the field we could gather it back in again but the lump rows were a pain to bale.

Had to give up baling at 6.30 as it started getting damp. It's not easy this year.

Question time, the term "nice stuff" has been used a lot on this thread, so what exactly does that mean? Do people have it analysed for feed value like you would a pit of silage? Or is it just, looks green, smells nice = nice stuff?
Nice and green and dry with some leaves in it still and not dusty or bleached or smelly = nice stuff.

we all know what the ewes will go mad for next lambing time , meadow hay , light green, , properly dried without beating the leaves off it near the end ,(prob 4 days)
very high quality feed hay would be almost impossible to make in the uk most years , lucky to get a 5 day weather window , so a young ,high sugar, good clover content hay would be very difficult to dry on most farms ,
most prefer a good meadow hay fed alongside a bit of concentrate as best option , unless you go for wrapped silage / haylage

we are trying to make some leafy 2nd cut, before most start to head, in the hope that not only does it smell nice, it has a decent %protien. But it isn't going over well, as said, replacement tyre, now up to £2,000, which l find hard to believe, but it is a 'special type' !!!!!

Tyre was £1900, all baled now, different contractor ! From now on, that field is round bales only, we had trouble with the gateways silaging, ended up round baling half of it, first cut, and no chance of a wider gateway, which has 'lovely' stone built gate posts, 1 of which, now needs rebuilding ! All for 38, 6 stringers .

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
