Hay Making 2021

150ish small bales off of 2.6ac. Far more than we expected considering the fields have no fert, no manure, no nothing. They are soaking wet all winter, so wet there is a well in the middle.

Those stacked in the yard against the sleepers will be wrapped as come from the outside under the trees.

Managed to dodge the torrential rain yesterday, it missed us fortunately by about a mile. The big black clouds building didn’t do my blood pressure any good.

will feel a lot happier when our 25 acres looks like that, should have been yesterday, now today, all balers seem to be working flat out.

sat in our garden, when glastonbury happens, we can hear the music, must be at least 12 miles away, as the crow flies, wind in the wrong direction, sounds like an enormous thunder storm. Top of the farm, you can add the lights as well !

At last the washed out hay is dry enough to bale. Spread it out first.

Rake it up later on.

16% ideal for the power station (y)

Once round the field and it peed down.

Meanwhile at the other end of the farm my helpers are trying to actually finish a 10 acre field that we started yesterday and didn't get much done as it wasn't ready to start until 4 o clock.

Then it peed down there too.

and the field was abandoned with a few rows left.

Sometimes farming is slightly too much fun.

our haymaking aint been good either, 1st field no bother, 2nd, still unbaled, told baler man to turn first, and come in from the other way, nope, didn't react to stop, front wheel caught gate post, blew tyre, half in/out. And completely blocking the road, new tyre on it's way, 3 hrs.
Tractor only 170 hrs on clock, new tyre £700, hay not baled.
Grass growth since cutting last thursday, is manic, rowed up today, it's green between the rows, like it had been down for weeks, turn it again, there will be to much green in it, think it will have to be wrapped, bugger.

All stacked in the shed up the lister blackstone. Every year we say no small bales ever again then we do some more. 700 this year. Not as many as in the good old days but enough for two 50+ year olds in this heat. Last stuff was meadow hay nice and dry. Ryegrass in June was a bit damp. Something will eat it.

I like the small bales reminds me of my younger days pitching them up onto the trailer with the pitch fork laughing when you dropped it back over your head if you had heavy ones & they were stacked high on the trailer, then the bale slave came along took a lot of the hard work out of it just had to get them stacked for the loader to pick them up after leaving the sledge…..happy days😅

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
