I have just been asked by a new contact about hedge planting.
What is the cost of planting a new traditional country type hedge at 5 whips / metre in 2 rows ( supplying plants)?

Depends if you can get the plants under a grant scheme or even for free... There are various schemes giving away large numbers if you look around. If it is a publicly accessible location get a group of enthusiasts involved and it might cost nothing more than a supply of tea and coffee.... Or is it you have been asked to do the job in which case say nowt about what I just said

I used to get plants from these guys http://www.ctsplants.com

They have a price list on their home page. I can't remember what the rate for planting was. Circa 25p/plant IIRC. Guards & canes extra from these guys https://www.green-tech.co.uk/tree-planting-products Don't go for the cheapest canes - my crew broke nearly as many as they planted! I used 14-16mm with Tubex guards

He is a hero if he is averaging 2,000 a day. Is that with canes and guards?
I reckon 2 good people in average ground conditions (not too much stone or old roots) can just about do a thousand.
No canes or guards and ground all levelled with digger etc but 1800 one day and 2200 next day,,,used a head torch for about an hour otherwise all done in daylight but yes I was surprised as well, he puts his tunes on and just works young guy too good to see someone actually working,

I used to budget for £12/m all in. It usually worked out closer to £10/m but the boss liked a very diverse species mix with some weird & wonderful plants. 50% hawthorn then another 15 species for the other half. 4 plants/m roughly 18" apart in 2 rows. Soil banked up for better nesting habitat.

Does this include ground preparation beforehand, spraying off with glyphosate / keeping bases clean? Just considering whether to put an application in for BN11 and working out the finances.

No, just the contractor to plant them and materials.

Sorry to pick your brains again, but I can't get through to the RPA helpline, but does gapping up (BN7) just pay for the actual length of new hedge planted, or does it cover the existing lengths of hedge in the boundary? I am just working out why it's a lower per metre rate.

So really with the admin and ongoing maintenance requirements along with it, you aren't going to put the hedges in for the cost of the grant.

Can I just ask how do you get such high figures for hedge planting? I did some recently at £1.50/m for the plants and £1/m for me to plant them very slowly and inneficiently. How on earth do you get anywhere near £10/m?

Here is an invoice for some of the hedge plants we got a couple of months ago. Inc canes & tubes
Good strong plants & walking around yesterday hard to find a failure.
Reckon the grant standard cost comfortably covers all costs
