Hi,
Long intro but trying to give all relevant facts.
I’ve got a Briggs &Stratton Handygen 2500 portable generator powered by a 5 HP engine , it’s probably 10 years old and kept outside under a plastic sheet and on the rare occasions we get a power failure I plug it into the house supply using a clever changeover switch. We had our first power failure last week so I went out and started it up - which miraculously it did first time. I filled up the tank with fresh petrol- and used it for half am hour before it stopped and refused to start again.
Started investigating- drained tank, no sign of water. removed carb thoroughly cleaned out and blew with compressed air, cleaned plug (and a few days later replaced with new plug). Despite this still refused to start. Began thinking it could be coil although with the spark plug removed and earthed there was a spark - not a big fat spark, but a spark. Similarity, when I fitted a “spark tester” between the plug and lead this also showed it was sparking. I also resistance tested the coil according to a YouTube video I’d found and his suggested the coil was fine. I also tried Eazystart, squirting petrol into the air intake and even squirting a syringe full of petrol into the cylinder, but it just wouldn’t start.
However was still suspicious of the coil so decided to buy a new one. Problem was nowhere could I find the model number of the engine to identify the coil. There is a number on the engine cowl but this apparently is not related to the engine model number and Googling I found a post where somebody had a similar problem finding the model number and reckoned it was hidden under the silencer - but I tried removing the silencer only to find the bolts were rusted in and I didn’t want to force things. So decided to search Ebay and found a photo of an identical coil (the identifying feature is that the coil has two mounting holes in each arm). Ordered coil and it arrived only to be the wrong type - see photo, the new coil would mount too far from the engine. Contacted seller who reckons that’s the correct type of coil based on the model number in the description and it’s just a generic photo!! He will take it back but I’m still stuck without a coil.
So - basic question, does anyone recognise the coil and what Briggs and Stratton it’s from so I can make a more informed search for a new one?
