Used a young lad to do some work. Received his bill last night. No bank details, so can’t pay by BACS, but he has put his National Insurance number and his Unique Tax Reference number. I need to have a word i think, he shouldn’t be putting these numbers on an invoice should he?

No, he doesn't need to supply them not unless your taking him in the books as an employee and paying his tax for him.

young lads maybe never actually seen an invoice before and doesn't really know what he should/should not put on, have you got a few you could show him for a bit of future guidance. At least you know he has a utr number and genuinely self employed.

I've never understood why this stuff isn't taught in schools. It's considered necessary to indoctrinate educate children as to all sorts of opinions and fanciful notions, but when it comes to the realities of the paperwork required to live and work in this country, you just get thrown out into the world and left to work it out for yourself.

To answer the op, then yes, it would probably be of great benefit to the young guy to show him some examples, and explain why everything is laid out as it is.

Buy him a duplicate invoice book and show him how to fill it out.
Unusual to find a youngster who doesn't zap everything with his phone most don't do cash or cheques. Maybe he hasn't thought about how he wants to be paid.
Also a possibility someone else is taking advantage of him or just taking the p**s out of him.
Invite him round to collect his money and have a chat and educate him over a cuppa

This, give him a ring to thank him for the invoice but you would prefere to pay online by BACS and ideally he shouldn’t include the info he has on an Invoice. Invite him round with another invoice without the details on and he can have this one back and offer that if he needs any help or guidance that you’re happy to help.

Probably worth chatting to him a little about tax/NI etc a little guidance now could save the young lad alot of trouble in the future if he's not prepared for tax bills etc. It could be all very new and scary for him and having someone for a bit of helpfull friendly advice when needed could be whats needed to keep him on the right track and lead to a good working relationship between you both even if its just occasional jobs or more regular work.

Advise him that he needs to keep those numbers to himself, they would be useful to a scammer coupled with his address and date of birth.

Invoice only needs name and address. If vat reg that number plus limited company number if trading as limited company. I am always surprised with websites that do not have company number on as that is a legal requirement.

Everyone self employed that’s worked here gives their Self Employed number so we can prove that they are self employed if asked by HMRC but it’s never used for any other circumstances, not sure if it’s their UTR number or just self employed reference number, it’s always given straight to accountants 🤷🏻‍♂️

My two boys did "business studies" at school.
Union and Employment law, which can change overnight , was explained.
Cashflow, profit and loss, etc wasn't.

Waste of time they said

and therin lies a truism as most have only ever gone to school and learnt feck all ,having said that the the guys who taught me at school had in the main come back from the war and i look back and realise they where commited to education of the young and not just in the subjects they taught, though i can remember one poor sod who if you banged your desk top down jumped off his chair and hid behind his desk as thought it was a bomb, kids can be bast----s

Has he been self employed long? Come to think of it is he even self employed?
Could he be employed temp/casual with several people and they sort tax and NI out etc?
How old is he?

give him 5 mins of your time, have a friend chat with him not a boss chat, its nice you have spotted it. too many use it as a way to cop out of paying an invoice or use it as a delay tactic. He's having a go and thats what matters and if he's a trier and gets on with stuff good on him!.
