Hi Folks, need a little help with my grandas 35x. Came without a tax book, reg number is XAV 842, dvla say that the number is too old for their records. Someone has replaced the serial number plate and it has no serial number now đź‘Ž what's the best way to go about getting a tax book?

That number plate tallies with the dealers plate being Aberdeenshire and registered ( give or take a day or so either side) April 1963.
Any of the clubs or associations assisting with the DVLAs V765 number recovery scheme will tell you that DVLA now insist on documentary evidence linking the registration number to a chassis number, rather than just a vehicle. So an old tax disc is now not acceptable for example.
Without the chassis number, you ain't keeping that plate, but all may not be lost.
All over the country there are records offices or archive offices, and lots of them have vehicle registration archives. Some are better than others, some have chassis numbers, some don't.
Somewhere, I have a list of the offices and what registration details they keep. Unfortunately I just can't lay my hands on it, but I have an idea. You'll need to leave it with me. It sticks in my mind that Aberdeenshire is a place where the records are lost, but I'll let you know.
If the records are there, and include a chassis number, that is as good as an RF60 logbook, and either of the mentioned clubs will be able to recover that plate.

I am assuming that you have actually spoken to DVLA, not just looked on the website?
Even so, you'd still need to know the chassis number even to use a V62.

Watch this space.

Drawn a blank. Aberdeenshire registration records do exist, but only 1921 through 1948, and are kept at Droitwich Spa. Records not kept for '63, so not the result I was hoping for.
If anything useful crops up, I'll add to your thread.

As far as I am aware the reg no. XAV would have originally been issued at Ipswich, Suffolk, so the Aberdeen supplier plate must be a later addition, looks a modern repro plate, did pop rivets exist in early 1960's?. The Ipswich office closed several years ago, but were a great help to me when trying to retain plates for some of my tractors. Even had a visit from one of there officers to inspect a tractor. Seemed genuinely interested in trying to help keep original numbers. I have not had any registation issues lately, but "Computer says no" seems to be the current standard reply.

As I said, Aberdeenshire IS correct, well, ALL the information I have given is correct.
It would be a strange coincidence if the dealers plate was from something else and at the same time my reference book was wrong as well.
The issue with registering this one is the lack of chassis number. You need 'A' chassis number for an age related plate, you'd need 'THE' chassis number to get this plate back on it.

No, XAV is definitely an Aberdeenshire issued registration number, Morayshire was SO, next door Banffshire was SE, next door to that Aberdeenshire had AV as one of it's registration numbers.

Would being expelled from FOFH not colour your judgement a tad?
Not at all, being honest and helping folk is more important to me. Being expelled from a club for being honest is not a bad recommendation. The club directors trying to hide what actually happened should have had them all expelled, how any club can have an unexplained deficit of +ÂŁ20,000 is unbelievable. But nobody in the club except myself had the guts to challenge them. The fact that the club membership has dropped by 1968 members since says a lot!
FOFH seems to like shooting itself in the foot!
Back to the registrations.... FOFH only dates a tractor for you, sometimes to the nearest decade, and sends you a letter to 'verify' their guesstamate, but they charge approx ÂŁ30 and then leave you to deal with DVLA if there are any queries.
The Ferguson Club do all for free for members, but they also deal directly with DVLA on your behalf.
