A normal check valve prevents reverse flow at all times. A pilot check valve allows reverse flow when there is pressure in the system. This means that if a flexi pipe fails the system pressure is lost and reverse flow is prevented, I.e. the ram won’t open/close and drop the load or whatever. Telehandler lift and crowd rams have them for this reason.

Thanks for that. So could a normal check valve still let the ram extend and retract under pressure?

Well no as you need flow in both directions for the ram to be used and a normal check valve will allow one way operation for the first use and then the check valve will prevent it moving back. It has to be a pilot check valve or nothing.

You would only be putting it in to prevent the top link extending in the event of pipe failure.

On my 5455 there flexible pipes going to the link arm lift rams and there are no valves on them so probably wouldn’t need to worry about the top link in my case.

Those saying weld a couple of ends to a ram, how will it end if this fails and is deemed to be a contributory factor in an accident on the road or a pollution incident when the sprayer or fert spinner dumps its load?
I weld plenty by the way, but this is a job I would shy away from.

I remember thinking it was a bridge to weld new ends onto tractor arms, then I seen them made in the factory, 2 welds on each arm
Just be sure they are welded by a competent person
