Just wondered if it would be useful for folk who are facing the task of home schooling had somewhere where they could ask for help? I know a lot of parents are not confident in certain aspects of maths for instance.

Today, although I understand the difference between "equals" and "equivalent" signs, I found it tricky to explain it to my child. Fortunately I have a friend who teaches maths to his age group to help me.

Perhaps a place where we can share resources or ask for a hand with certain concepts from subjects would be handy as it's certainly going to be April, if not September before my children are back at school.

My wife teaches science at a secondary school and has told me about these websites.

Oak academy is a online classroom system set up by the govt with videos of taught lessons about all the main subjects.

Another one is Seneca, (senecalearning.com) again with all sorts of things to look at and do.

I've forgotten exactly what she said they contain and can do but they would be a good place to get some ideas.

I don't know if many people are aware but Microsoft teams can be accesses via x box and PlayStation 4.

I'm just having half an hour with my lad doing maths,extremely frustrating because I am very capable of maths but very incapable of teaching maths,home teaching is not for me

My two are knuckling down, simply because they have twigged that the only way for them to get out of the country is to be able to apply themselves to something. I give them fairly free reign to organise their work.

Enthusiasm is not like back in march. Need some sun to get outside really.

My 8 year old is doing OK, the learning programmes on the Oak academy are good, but annoyingly we are 9 weeks behind on the English poetry as my daughter hadn't done the first module when she was attending school before Christmas. But the school aren't worried so long as we keep doing each day. Printing work of for her to do is getting costly in ink, and then scanning it back in again for teacher to check is time consuming, but we're quietly getting used to it now.

There has never been so many pe lessons running, around the sheep and feeding animals

I'm currently on teaching duties this morning for our 6 yr old, most days have a link to oak academy lesson todays was maths learning to measure so was happy with that one and shes been happy enough doing it. The mrs does most of the home schooling while shes trying to work from home but its all a bit of a juggle between us. Were working on so long as she gets her maths work and her reading done anything else is a bonus. Theres days where you know she could do the work in ten minutes and an hr later your still banging your head on the table. Was talking with teacher down the road saying I dont know how you do it she said its much easier than when there not your own kids.

Anyway me able to show me what method a yr6 child would understand to multiply 12.5 by 12.5? I can do it five ways, but how do they learn it? All I hear is "we haven't done this before". But the question needs it doing.

If you have a tablet get a pen for it then can write over the top of it digitally and then send it in. I bought a spurious one from amazon for £28 and does the job fine with iPad.

That sounds better! She's currently sitting at my old desktop so none of that tech. we have said about getting an ipad for her so may be better allround

Do numicons actually work? Trying to do maths with my 6 year old. School seem to teach number lines and numicons and he is just getting confused. I tried to get him to use his fingers, works for me!

Knowing a subject well and being able to teach it to someone else is a different thing entirely.

As I have said before, friends of ours have 3 young kids and the husband of the pair is a primary school head teacher. In lockdown MK1 he found it impossible to teach his own children at home. If he can't do it, what hope have any of us?

Our secondary doing nearly all lessons online as you would expect from paid professional educators after nearly a year of coronavirus in the UK. Primary basically just checking in for an hour a week. Which is an hour more than before.

It's all about making connections with numbers that get them up to ten. We used an abacus - old but works. Helps them understand that 8+7 is the same as 8+2+5, hence 10+5. Maths is easier once number bonds are in the memory. Fingers is the same as to do 8+7 you start with 8, add two then you run out of fingers! So you've counted to ten, then count five more.

They seem to do several methods to get to the same result but there's no harm in that.

I'm enjoying the maths. Can't help at all with yr8 German as I never did it. I just make him a cup of tea and watch.

our 2 are doing much better this time now school are doing live lessons all day on teams

not much input required from us at all this time and orher than breaks they seem happy to sit on there from 8.15 -4 chattering away to teachers and classmates

massive relief as last lockdown was a absolute nightmare, I can’t tell you how much difference the live aspect has made


broadband is getting some stick though with x4 of us all on teams at the same time !!!

I just notice that he often says he understands something but I don’t think he does. He has a good memory for things but I don’t think he is forming the bonds yet. Practice and patience I guess.
I would be no good at German either and I did a fair bit at school. Used short term memory to get me through rather than understanding (probably where my son gets it from).
I am enjoying home schooling as when he gets stuff and is proud of his achievements it does make you proud as well.
