How effective is weed wiping to control docks, nettles and especially thistles(all types) in grassland?
Which chemicals are most effective? Thankyou for any info

Think you can only use roundup ,not sure about the others
Fantastic on Rushes .

Thistles and Docks . Will they get far enough ahead of the grass before they get to old
Quad sprayer and Grazon Pro I find best for Nettles

Have used pastor through ours and been fairly good results but the mix rate was a bit random ( cue all the " it's not licensed " posts ). Roundup mix is about 1:25
It’s one of them anomalies, it’s not legal cos it’s not licensed for that use yet the reality is you will use less chemical so will be better for the environment and will kill the target species just the same.
It will be better for your pocket too with less chemical used, it’s difficult to see what harm it could do.....................................................................other than to the sales/bank balances of the company’s that make the chemical, which is probably why it’s not licensed for such use.

If I wasn't organic, I would weed wipe the thistles and rushes, very cheap to do with a weed wiper, just takes a while. I would be inclined to use something like Grazon, plus a bit of washing up liquid as a wetting agent at about 25:1, or roundup. I agree with Tarw Coch above.

The bloke we get any spray from has always said to put washing up liquid in with roundup but people get their nuts in a twist over the licencing of that as well.

Why washing up liquid?

I always use a water conditioner with glyphosate through a sprayer, and probably would through a wiper. It certainly speeds up it’s action, as well as making it rain fast sooner.

I was told Thistlex works very effectively too (assuming it’s just thistles), but again, you’d have to use it at night.?

Have used glyphosate in worst areas and saw someone:rolleyes: using our logic with grazon pro, thistlex and pastor at various times, important to hit them at time chemical manufacturer recommends.

Just breaks the surface tension so it wets it and froths so more visible to see how much you're putting on. More importantly cheap Aldi fairy liquid is only 50p?

A lot of steep ground here and roundup can run off the roller on the headlands

The bubbles give you an idea how much is on the roller/carpet /brush so you don't overload it... they also transfer to the weeds to give you a rough idea where you've already wiped (y)

Just use the cheapest stuff you can get.

To the OP, we've used a weedwiper loads from nettles and thistles through to bracken on the hill. I just put glypho through it, works perfect
