How far off is harvest?

What's your guess, ready or not?

Looks good but you really ought to do the 20 pod check as explained in the last Niab weekly notes. No good paying for advice and then ignoring it:rolleyes::scratchhead:

Have done it for the last two days. Got different results each time (and in the wrong order!). Some really yellow pods have all green seeds in and then some quite green ones have fairly brown seeds in!

One agronomist says go half way up the main raceme whereas NIAB were saying on modern varieties that a lot more yield comes from the side branches (which we have a fair amount of) and to go half way up the side branches. Other agronomist says just wait for the crop to look light golden and then go.

As per a comment above, think I'm going to only do some headlands and then the odd whole field to allow some later night combining without high risk of blocking the combine.

When you read things like a % of yield for every extra day of green leaf area (I think that was wheat) it does make you nervous of going too early. That said, a day earlier of combining is worth a few grand if there's no downside.

Off to do first middle of a field of barley tonight so that I've got an area to test if combine is feeling in a good mood re breaking down, calibrate yield and moisture meter and generally remind ourselves how a combine works.

I always think it better to go later with glyphosate than earlier if the pod tests are inconclusive for the reason you mentioned above. I’m also thinking of doing headlands only if this weather keeps on.

Snap, after going too early one year and suffering the indignity of some red seed, I go late and it's been fine, I reckon I may get into some 10 days time, still very green here.

Does anyone use diquat? Just thinking but it gives you the option to leave it to ripen naturally and if things don't go to plan you could go through a couple of days before the combine to even it up.
