How to fix poor paint

Im after reading a few treads about paint and it now has put it into my head again that I need to do something with my JCB loader which has some flaking paint.

So some paint has come off over the winter due to no undercoat. This has now got a coat of surface rust on it and needs to be sorted. I dont want to get the whole thing blasted as its only two or three small areas. What is the right tool to use on the angle grinder to get it back to bare metal? Is it then a few coats of undercoat and then a few coats of top coat?

My other issue is do i do the topcoats over all that area (lets say the boom) or do I just do I just do over the parts which completely lost the paint.

Flap disc on bare metal. Feather the edges of existing paint. Decent etch primer then undercoat then 2 top coats. Don’t have to do the whole item but it will fail at some point. Best thing to think is paints number 1 priority is protection number 2 is aesthetic. If your patching repairs often looks nicer if you mask off an area that’s square rather than leaving random brush strokes hoping that helps a bit ??

After cleaning up the metal use a rust killer then zinc primer followed by top coat. use a small foam roller to apply the paint. You will get a much better finish than a brush and no over spray. Do not be tempted to use a fluffy roller as the fluff will come out and stick in the paint.

This is very interesting. I actually dont have a spray gun but was going to invest. Do you think a small foam roller would do a neat job without streaks? Can you send me a link of the correct one to use?

You will be amazed at the finish you get much better than brushing and no over spray and masking off. Rollers are so cheap you just bin them after use. Use an ordinary mini foam roller available any where . Long handled ones for awkward places are available, they are used for painting behind radiators.
