Thanks. I grew it last year on a contract for an AD plant. It did well in the drought and was cut end of June at 16.5 tons acre.
This year they wanted more maize and grew the rye they needed at their own farm .
Reason I ask, is there’s a wholecrop option in mid tier, which I was looking at, but it had to be spring sown. So I thought it might be an option to grow rye for the AD. It stipulates that it’s got to be left in stubble until the following spring , which would be fine for me , as I’d grow maize after it.
That would work if someone wanted wholecrop wheat, but my AD guys, either want hybrid rye or maize.Spring wheat can be wholecropped fine. Will be good on your kinder dirt but does want putting in early and at a higher seed rate. Loves fertility, watch for mildew mind.

Why though? Spring wheat grown right (250kg/ha planted) will yield almost as high as rye..That would work if someone wanted wholecrop wheat, but my AD guys, either want hybrid rye or maize.
Ha ha, I know what you mean. Sometimes it seems daft not to get something extra for what we are roughly doing anyway, but then the devil is in the detail. Oh to still have our old HLS scheme. Now that was a good scheme for us, especially as we had a lot of cattle then.2 statements that worry me , spring rye and mid tier . just let go it's not worth it .
I’d have to have a word with my AD customers. Why though? Spring wheat grown right (250kg/ha planted) will yield almost as high as rye..
I’ve looked through old pdf’s I’ve got on here for you - this May help but i’d Highly recommend speaking to John burgess at KWS, seriously knowledgeable man who always has time to help/advise on any questions in terms of yields/varieties etc..

You cut it leafy I take it at that date?we grew hybrid rye this year, cut 23 rd apr. we have previously grown it on dry thin soil ground, and were pleased with amount, and quality (silage) for dairy cows. this year it was sown into really strong ground after kale, oct, the amount of bales from 6 acres, was 120, it looked good standing, it was baled only because it killed our mower, otherwise it would have been pitted, we have fed a odd couple of bales, cattle liked it and it smelt fine, on our better grounds we can get away sowing maize mid may. so if any body knows of another crop, that can be sown between 2 maize crops, that can give me potentially 20 tonnes acre, please let me know, otherwise 30+acres for next harvest. and I to would like to know if there is a spring variety.

Nothing will grow like that except possible OSR or forage rape but I wouldn’t want to bale that!

yes, cut leafy, but it was starting to head, not the best of springs for growing, so, if we were to leave it for another 2 or 3 weeks, would it be a better quality ? or should we leave it for whole crop, followed by rape/kale ? as it was developed for digesters, must have some good feed value.
a lot of members on here, probably won't believe me, when I say that, back in the 70s we used to put several thousand bamboo canes, in 4 metre squares, and then tie string across them to try and stop the rooks crows jackdaws, and a host of other avian types eating the shoots ! then came an anti bird dressing......bliss
but now that dressing is going to disappear, and packam wants to stop us shooting bird pests...…..Hence I am really keen to find alternatives. and another snippet of information for the younger generation... we used to get crops up to 15-20 feet high, and when we started ,we only had a 1 row harvester
are there any spring sown varieties of hybrid rye?
