Ingersoll rand 7/71 compressor trouble

Evenin all.
Got an ingersoll rand 7/71 in from a customer.
Initially it was in because it wouldn't re start once it has been used. Engine starts perfectly from cold, makes air, revs up etc. But switch it off, let air drain and try to re start and there is some kind of pressure somewhere backing up and not allowing it to crack. Fitted a new gear reduction starter and this now has the power to overcome this back pressure but it's working incredibly hard to get over that first couple of revolutions.
It's now useable with the new starter so went back to site but now won't produce enough volume of air. Gauge is showing 7bar as it should but it can't keep up with the shot blast demand as it did before.

It seems to me the lack of air and the loading of the engine may be related.

Oh dear Dave, no warranty on that starter now😆

Bit of progress.
sussed out the engine isn't reaching up properly when air drops.
Also took the pressure outlet pipe off the top of the separator and it's noticeably putting more air out of there than you can get out of the big tap. Which makes me wonder if there's some sort of blockage in the outlet manifold.

Also with the pipe on etc, if you manually Rev the engine up and tap open it eventually blows the relief valve. As though it's making more air than it can get rid of

Well sussed it in the end. There's a plastic pipe/sleeve inside the pressure pipe as it enters the manifold. This has melted and collapsed into the elbow. No wonder air couldn't get out

High jacking this thread since there are a few compressor experts here.

Ingersoll rand p130 tow compressor. Starts fine. Runs with key in position 2. let go of the key and it stops. In the book it says start engine (position 3) and hold key in position 2 until battery light goes out. Once light is out, release key (position1). Battery light goes out as soon as it starts but like I say will not keep running unless key is hold in position 2. Deutz f3l 1011 engine. Any help gratefully received

Sounds very much like one of the safety cut outs. Not familiar with that machine but it will probably have safety switches on oil pressure, low fuel, alternator, air/oil pressure. Etc

I have the same problem as this. Starting my 7/71, turn the key to pos. 3 to start the engine, move to pos. 2, then let go to release to pos. 1 and it cuts out. I’m guessing it is something like a sensor that is killing it. It’s infuriating! Any idea how to “check” / test these sensor if they’re faulty?

Guessing you already know this but I’ll suggest it anyway… With my one you turn the key to position 3 and then let it run for 10-15 seconds before releasing the key. It cuts out if you release before that.
