Hi Everybody

I am dealing with a shed insurance claim after storm damage and the insurers have given a figure but want to use their contractors and pay us when we pay there contracts invoices in stages I would like a pay-out
Instead and get my usual contractors I use regularly that I know will do a good job but the insures are only offering half of the pay-out for this option has anyone else experienced this?

This whole insurance thing is a scam.

We had a couple of bits of work done for subsidence by the insurers choice contractors, a mate who is a very professional builder thought that the work was at least 3 times what he would have charged anyone he didn't know and at least 4 times what he would have charged me.

I’ve come across a few that have done similar, with pie in the sky figures. The loss adjusters and “claims managers” then get wise to the inflated prices and want to keep the total spend down, so contractor and loss adjuster seem to cut down the size of the job to fit a smaller (but equally overcharged) budget. Charging big money for simple jobs and fluff so 80% of the budget is spent on things that don’t actually relate to doing thing that needs putting right e.g fencing off the site, hire of welfare unit, grass protection mats, skip protection mat etc.

Then the remaining 20% of the budget which is remaining is used to just bang a few nails in some bits of timber, add some glue and call that a structural repair. Can’t do any more than that…..would cost too much!

A recent example I saw itemised and allocated 1 man hour specifically to nail down a loose floorboard.

Then the remaining 20% of the budget which is remaining is used to just bang a few nails in some bits of timber, add some glue and call that a structural repair. Can’t do any more than that…..would cost too much!

Just like working for the council….actually doing the job they are hired for ends up being the least important and fundamental part of the whole process. 🙄

Thats a set up with a kick back to the insurance company at the end.

A payout is usually a reduced amount maybe 75% less. You don't have to do anything after that though. Could stick it in the bank.
Usually it's 3 quotes and decide from that. Though it can be difficult to get 3 quotes as everyone knows who the main contractor is likely to be and why price somthing you're unlikely to get.
I'd be on to them and see what you can do, you want the full amount and your own guy to do it!
Edit, you might get 75% of the claim amount as a cash settlement, or there abouts.

I have to say that we lost a two runs of Big Six sheets plus damage to other sheets where bits had flown off & penetrated through.
NFU Mutual sent out a loss adjuster within 2 days of ringing up and within 3 working days the money was in our account & use who you want

Not sure I can promote them on here though ..........

I had damage 2 years ago when a tree came down in a storm and and hit one of my buildings. I took some pictures and lodged a claim with the NFU Mutual. I got a quote from my local contractor which was accepted without a visit from an assessor and they paid out within a month. The contractor made the repair two months later.

Sound quick. Nfu were usually good to deal with for claims. Loss adjuster seem to know what goes on and who is out to try it on.

Wev always found nfu the best for claims paid, had a fire and loss adjuster was out in couple of days and money in another couple of days, had a breakin and house was insured with another firm who sent loss adjuster out, they then proceeded to send us a letter stateing they woukd not be paying as they thought it was fraud and to count ourselves lucky thet werent taking us to court, after 40 odd years of house insurance with zero claims they wouldnt pay a genuine claim, we just went nfu next time

One of our houses had some underpinning work done through the insurance. Guys spent 3 days jackhammering through rock to pour the concrete.
I'm no expert but why would you dig out rock to pour concrete to underpin? Surely the rock isn't going anywhere.
