As written elsewhere there may not be a great many people with knowledge that can be applied to your area. I used to farm in Zim a long time ago, but that was beef, tobacco and maize. I knew someone in Senegal - an expat Frenchman - who farmed chicken, very good money in that. I think he was somewhere near Kolda, but that might be my imagination because it is the only town there I can remember the name of. Melons are good if you have an irrigation source; friends of mine were big in produce, tomatoes always sell well and onions too. There is a fair mark-up in salads and a quick turnover too, but they are fiddly.Hello all, I am Mohamed from the Gambia. I just acquired a 4 hectares of land, which i want to use for farming. So I'm out here to learn from all you guys. Thank you
Thank you @Danllan for that great pieces of advice. They shall be well noted. Is your friend still in Senegal? I visited Zim some time ago when i was leaving in South Africa. It's a very nice place. As written elsewhere there may not be a great many people with knowledge that can be applied to your area. If you get any workers who will stay and are reliable and competent, pay them properly and keep them! Don't lend any kit out, it either won't come back or will be broken. Don't borrow unless it is from family, don't fall into the back-hander trap and always pay your bills on time. Good luck.
I've no idea if the French fellow is still in Senegal, that was around 2006 / 7; I met him near Arusha when he stayed in a friend's camp. Zim... hmm... is has the potential to be the richest country in Africa per head of population, since it has a superb range of climates for farming and, by area, the richest geology known on the continent. It also had very good infrastructure too, but the key word there is 'had'... Mugabe is now a pathetic figure with dementia, it is a kleptocracy; the near future is pretty bleak, but long-term it can be a success again.Thank you @Danllan for that great pieces of advice. Yes and no. Zanu have sold a lot of stuff to China officially, and probably as much again off the record. But any future government would be entirely within its rights to rescind all 'agreements' and to seek reparations from both its own native crooks and China - state and businesses. But there will certainly be short to mid term hardship, no error.I think you will find mr mugabe and his cronies have sold the lot to the chinese, the future for the Zimbabwean people is bleak

Hi allFor new member to introduce themselves, where your from, what you do etc. (If you want to of course!)
Well hello there ,its good to have a different type of voice on here, with your hands on experience you will be called on to give advice aswell as take it good or bad, welcome.,ps there are some right odd uns here aswell ,Hi all
I am a 'happily' single female fruit, nut and veg farmer within the commercial organic market and work as a freelance adviser and organic agri-business consultant. I am no hippie but a real serious farmer with over two decades of experience in agriculture and food security however at present I have taken a year off which is coming to an end soon so I am looking to get back to doing what I do best, farming...
Currently based in the West Country and looking to secure land in excess of 12acres (5hectares) to get me started whilst I build my farm and eventually expand. Any help, suggestions or advice you would like to offer will always be greatly appreciated and if I am able to assist in any way, please feel free to contact me.
I work with soils (soil scientist) and microbes as well as combining science with ancient land management (natural farming) practices to work on ways to maximize profit and productivity whilst also farming sustainably, I dont know it all and always eager and willing to learn so please feel free to offer any advice but be gentle, I am here to make friends or be amongst friends so please dont judge me too quickly due to my organic status.
I have never farmed conventionally and I would not know where to start, my background and upbringing was the natural farming way and I am proud to continue to share the knowledge that has been passed down if it can be productive and helpful to other farmers and the environment.
Have a good day.
Thanks
Paris
