Hi all

I am a 'happily' single female fruit, nut and veg farmer within the commercial organic market and work as a freelance adviser and organic agri-business consultant. I am no hippie but a real serious farmer with over two decades of experience in agriculture and food security however at present I have taken a year off which is coming to an end soon so I am looking to get back to doing what I do best, farming...

Currently based in the West Country and looking to secure land in excess of 12acres (5hectares) to get me started whilst I build my farm and eventually expand. Any help, suggestions or advice you would like to offer will always be greatly appreciated and if I am able to assist in any way, please feel free to contact me.

I work with soils (soil scientist) and microbes as well as combining science with ancient land management (natural farming) practices to work on ways to maximize profit and productivity whilst also farming sustainably, I dont know it all and always eager and willing to learn so please feel free to offer any advice but be gentle, I am here to make friends or be amongst friends so please dont judge me too quickly due to my organic status.

I have never farmed conventionally and I would not know where to start, my background and upbringing was the natural farming way and I am proud to continue to share the knowledge that has been passed down if it can be productive and helpful to other farmers and the environment.

Have a good day.

Thanks
Paris

Welcome Paris - there are a few females on here who farm in their own right, and we can always do with some help with the unruly males, so welcome!
What sort of nuts to you farm?
Hello

Thank you for your kind words. I did Macadamia, Pecan and Chestnuts but moving on to Almonds and walnuts but can do most nuts, well, brings out the nuttiness in me. I rotate with fruit, nut and veg and my workers...flocks of ducks and chickens. There is also a lot of experimentation on going, eg I farmed Avocados as well and had between 8-10 different varieties on my previous farm. After a lot of research I found that there are some cultivated varieties that can handle temperate climates of up to -10C and even be cross-pollinated to with stand harsher climates, so I am keen to experiment with commercial Avo crops here as well.

Hi, another newbie here.

I am a 29 year old tractor driver from Scotland. I have only been doing farm work for the past 3 years after stumbling into the profession after leaving the army. Although I lived in a rural area all my life I never considered a career in farming. I now absolutely love the job and look forward to hopefully spending the rest of my days working the land.

Currently I work on a 250 acre farm which is 50 acre crop trial work and around 200 in commercial barley. I have gained very good experience already in ground work including ploughing and sowing of barley and wheat, and have gained experience operating a combine this harvest. I hope to gain my spraying certificate this year, and am looking to move onto a more large scale farm in the future once I have sufficient experience.

Seriously, you'll find most folk friendly on here and help is always at hand. Have fun.

Hello and thank you @holwellcourtfarm
I think I am considered to be a "first generation farmer" as I am not from a farming background... But got into the industry through YF, studied agriculture at uni and now work in marketing for an ag tech company in Suffolk. How long have you been a member?
Thanks for the heads up, I'll watch out for @davieh3350
Best, Rachel.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
