Irish slaughter houses shutting

A lot being said about the "illegal protests", why the need to picket when holding off cattle is the ultimate protest and not illegal. I'm assuming they aren't getting the cattle so why picket as well? Am I missing something?

Wow, the dung is really hitting the mechanical air-circulation device over there. The plants would just be gearing up for their busy time too. A lot of cattle killed off grass in the backend, I believe.
Is there really that many grass fed cattle? I was over there 5 weeks ago and didn't see that many outside

I had something explained to me about economics years ago that I haven’t forgotten. When I was at school when you put the tv on and watched the news there was someone on strike miners, teachers British Leyland shipyard workers the list went on. At the time my father always reckoned the government wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. Now most folks have plenty of finance and other debt thy cannot afford to be keep on strike.
Both farmers that are on strike and sending cattle in will no doubt have their reasons

Irish farmers cannot afford to back down.

Irish plant operators cannot afford to run the factory's with no stock to process either and cannot afford to back down and offer better prices!

No win situation for both sides!

Because if they offer better prices farmers will strike again in a few weeks/ months when they still aren't happy with prices and 2 if they offer them better prices after they picket the plants it could well spread to the UK!

The best thing farmers could do is set up a quota system among themselves, if everyone kept selling 50% of their normal output the factory keeps operating but the beef remains scarce, they have their operating costs which obviously with no cattle and staff from agencies or on zero hour contracts they can be sent home at no cost to the factory. It’s better to keep them ticking over whilst maintaining some cash flow, I know there will be many farmers with financial commitments, rent, mortgages, wages, feed bills, hp payments.... the factory’s no this fine too and know the farmers will crack first. Sad but true in my opinion.

Selling a % keeps the cattle from going massively overweight on farm and slightly lessens the glut for when things get going again.

Firms are going to fight it for a while yet because they will not want a situation where protests become the norm for improving prices. Firms must want a steady supply and a sustainable industry so its in there interests to make farming somewhere nr profitable surely

The plant where I work has a sister plant in NI. I was told last October/November time that they were busy killing cattle off the grass. A lot of short-term lets over there, I think? Conacre?
We are talking about Eire where the protests are taking place. I suppose if I had traveled further south and west I might of seen more livestock, I stayed mostly in West Meath
