Jcb 530-70 Lost 2nd gear

On my jcb 530-70 on the grip shift gears second gear won’t engage from neutral but will engage if you change into second from moving….all the other gears are engaging perfectly but second won’t….it’s my favourite gear for around the yard as well….anyone got any ideas?

One of mine occasionally loses 2nd in forwards but not reverse, never enough to make me investigate.

I’d start at the solenoids on top of the gearbox.

Ours used to do that, spent ages messing with solenoids. Turned out to be a box out job. From what I was told o rings go hard and don’t let things slide around like they should. Second probably worse because as you say it’s most used gear. Might be electrical so have a good check first though.

when I lost 2 gear on my cat, it was the twist grip that was the fault, easy fix in the end and only cost £280.

Had something similar on JCB, but very intermittent so I stuck with it while it got worse. By that time I'd decided that it needed a new shuttle/gear lever. No problems since changing it.

A friend of mine has suggested it might be the shuttle gear lever. Just didn’t want to buy one if it wasn’t that but have a few suggestions of that now

Ours broke down in the shed at lambing time. After some time spent looking at various things it was the earth wire snapped off the shuttle lever. The shuttles are prone to problems.
Check the relays on the side of the dash feel if any of them are warming up while it’s running you can swap them over on ours.
Is there not an error code on the screen to look up?

Error code, bloody hell it’s 24 years old 😅

Well that’s good it’s easy to fix then
2nd and 4th is the same gear split
1st and 3rd is the same gear split
I think anyway
So if you are getting power to get second from changing up or down it’s unlikely to be solenoid problems on the gearbox
Check for power at 2nd gear solenoid when you select 2nd from neutral (it’s unlikely that that’s happening)

I’ll give it a go cheers

1000hrs would be the service interval anyway for transmission. Although it wont be the reason for your current problem.

If you can get 2nd gear by starting off in another one and the shifting to it you may just find it's the contacts in lever, otherwise its sounding like weak clutch pack.
Do you mean contacts in the gear shift lever?
Does that mean it just wants a new one?

On ours the horn is in amongst the shuttle lever that has the gears on. You can take them to bits if you are careful but it’s best to take it off just 2 bolts clamped onto the other stalk around the steering column the multi plug and the plastic off first. You can get in from the horn button end there’s a circlip in there

That’s the same set up as mine

Come to think of it the horn doesn’t work either…
