JCB starter woes

Using the 1998 530/70 yesterday turned it off, the engine stopped but the starter motor was turning and the only way to stop it was with the isolator and now it’s dead apart from a click when the ignition is turned.
We think the starter is burnt out but any ideas what could of caused the starter to stick on.
Could it be the ignition switch or maybe the starter relay? Or something else?

it'll be the solenoid or were the gear slides on the shaft. There a load of crap imo so not worth spending time and money on. you might not be able to easy identify the solenoid on it anyway as lots of copies/variations of the original Lucas.

as said a genuine iskra/mahle is the best fix.

4.2kw can be a bit tight fit depending on what extra bits are in the way, plus on a old 530-70 you will probably have a bunch of ignition feed wires on there to re end to 10mm eyes.

3.2kw will be the easy option to fit and will work better than original lucas with a decent 800amp plus battery. (obviously 4.2kw is going to spin it much easier and faster though)

Pm me if you would like me to supply and or post a pic of starter you have fitted and what room you have length ways.

might be, I've actually had two different mahle starters that were both duff from the start. Don't buy them anymore.

I wouldnt recommend a non gear reduction mahle starter!

Had maybe only one 4.2kw mahle fail on warranty and I sold alot of them now!

I go to alot of trouble to cross ref starters to a mahle gear reduction sometimes!
It cant always be done but it's my starter of choice above anything else cause I know it will work.

How does it keep turning even when the ignition is off?

Normally because the contacts in solenoid have melted together if its actually cranking the engine over.

If it's just stuck in mesh with flywheel and not actually cranking it then it's the gear not sliding on the shaft cause it's full of dust and crap most likely.

Over time and lots of use the contacts keep getting thinner, until eventually they get hot and weld together.

With the old Lucas and Lucas style starters, many were exchanged for another when all they really needed was a new solenoid cap and contact fitted.

Best I ever did was on an old Hilux, the contacts were as thin as a corn flake packet, but it was a simple job to replace the contacts inside(thank you Wood Auto for the parts).
