What’s the verdict on these please? 2011 25ft cut. I’m slightly concerned about going 6 Walker with some narrow roads to get between fields. What is the biggest output 5 Walker machine from both JD and NH from around that era, what would output be in 2.75t/acre spring barley be? Thanks

New Holland 5 walker would be CX8040/50,with a 20ft head it will sit at 5-6acs/HR no problem, cracking combine but won't be cheap,6 walker will be better value.
A six walker on narrow tracks helps keep the width down,I went from a cx8040 to a cx8.80 on 24" tracks and there's very little difference in width.

It’s finding a nh that’s the problem, well at the right kind of money as you say. That has me looking at this JD. Was put off the 9000 series JDs but just wondered if these are better.

You'll definitely find a 670 wide on smaller lanes if it's not tracked, although that depends on the wheels it's got on. Really you need an escort to be safe so you've got to decide if the improvement in capacity is worth it.

I would imagine the output of a JD or NH would be pretty similar when they've got the same amount of walkers. From experience you would get maximum 45 - 50 acres done in a long day with a 560 (JD 5 walker alternative of the same era w/ 22ft) on a decent field, I guess that would be much more comfortable with a 6 walker on 25ft and you should be pushing 65-70 acres if it's all in a block.

I don't know about the NH models to compare but the JDs have never been the best at separating barley, no matter what you do you'll have grain in the straw if you want to maintain a decent straw quality too - although I think the latest generation (2019 onwards) are supposed to be better at this. I'm not saying it's horrendous but it's not perfect either.

I'd recommend looking at a slightly newer one than 2011 if possible because they updated the cab around 2013 I think to be a much nicer place to be (i.e actually being able to stretch your legs out) along with other various improvements to the thrashing system. You want to be on the Prodrive transmission (electric operation) also because the manual gearstick is crude. Hillmaster is pretty standard on most of them also (as long as they aren't tracked), if your working on anything moderately inclined then you wont look back after using it.

If you were put off by the 9000 series of John Deere combines the T series ones of the age your talking about share many components. Out put is very variable depending on crop conditions. They'll go like holy hell for a couple of hours a day in a rotten ripe crop but most of the time they're only average. It wasn't until the 2015 update models with larger drums and concaves and infinitely better sieves that John Deere had a combine that was a consistent performer.
As an aside note they changed the cabs in 2012 to the current one. It's probably worth looking out for one of those as it's probably the best cab on the market
