Has anyone fitted weights to the new toothed closing wheels on pro series openers?

Standard units do a good job in most conditions but there are places where more weight / more spring pressure would be better.

Get weights made or better just to change to gutters and weights?

The new pro series closing wheel springs should be able to provide higher forces than the 90 series. Coupled with the narrower slot made by the boot it can give the impression that the pro series closing wheel is adequate. The idea behind the use of the Guttler wheel was that the wedge shape of the prisms split the side wall compaction of the slot, allowing the roots to grow sideways as well as downwards. It also allows better covering of the slot. You’d be better to fit the Guttlers and weights than just fitting weights to the pro series wheels. A fair number of pro series drills have already been done. If you don’t decide to fit the Guttlers you’ll need a ring roller with paddles.

Thank you for the info. Will get changed over to Guttlers first. We tried to sped the drill without closing wheels at all in anticipation of this issue but JD wouldnt have it unfortunately

@Simon Chiles have you tried aftermarket Thompson style wheels? I ran 2 pro series wheels and 2 from Arricks Australia (2 seasons on them). My observations were in damp soil the gap in the pro series filled with dirt. The Arricks ones didnt. Arricks ones seemed to wear quick in first year but due to the design , still work. To my way of thinking, even though the arricks wheels are much lighter than pro series they still work due to there aggressive design without adding compaction to the slot.

I haven’t tried the Thompson style wheels, when I was looking to change the closing wheel my research found that spading wheels were great in purely direct drilling but as soon as you used the drill in cultivated soil the long fingers would flick seeds out of the seed furrow especially when shallow seeding. Being a contractor I needed a drill to perform in all conditions so I designed a wheel that could work in all situations. I then discovered that Guttler already made the same shape wheel as my design so we adapted them to fit the drill. Now Guttler make them to go straight on. I haven’t seen an Arrick closing wheel so can’t comment on them.
