Evening, just wonder if any of you out there, have any experience with the John Deere 5r or 5m series. I was originally interested in the 5100r but then a local dealer had a couple of 5m's used in stock and was not quite sure of the difference.
So any advice and experience, would be fantastic.

We had a 5100m back in 2012 and the gearbox on that was more than horrendous should have spent the extra and bought the R with the power quad box

Are you meaning brand new? Rs look great but have heard gearbox isnt great.
I would like a demo but they cant get them for some reason
Yes brand new, spoke to my local dealer and there is a 12+ wait for one but the same dealer has a couple of 5ms with under 500hrs, just wondered if it was worth the wait??? or just go for the 5m.

Own 5115m , it's ok, I class it as a stock man tractor, the duty it has grass harrowing, 6 rotor tenders, rolling, post knocked, hedge cutting, bale shredder.
If your road hauling, ploughing, drilling , I'd buy the r series,

Neighbour has a 67plate 5100r,hates the gearbox,to be fair its not a suitable gearbox for a stockman tractor, takes way too much power out of 100hp.They are launching the 5m range with a proper powerquad gearbox now apparently which is much more suitable.Cant understand why they didn't put the powerquad in the 5r.

I'm not sure about these small utility ranges for farm work, unless you really are doing low stress work. I just don't think they're built for hard work.
Would a 6110M be out of reach? I like the idea of the smallest model in a heavier duty range. If you didn't go mad with the options would it compare with the 5R on price?

I would stay away from 5R. Lot of problems with softwares, gearboxes, brakes, cable harnesses front-loader spool valves etc. And many owners feel them under powered.

Morning, the 4000hrs is that on the 5r, was just wondering how they were on the road and what there like towing, max 8t
Cheers David
Ours is a 5100 m with a 16 speed and a single spliter so we have 32 speeds. My brother drives it mainly it does the mowing and raking ect I do sow fertiliser with it and the spraying. The nephew used it in the round baler the other day and baled up the spring barley straw and said that the tractor was good and powerful even in a hill, hanging in when it had a nearly made bale [emoji2]
We do not do lots of road work with it but once my brother mastered how to change up the ranges on the move loaded he does fly on when in the mood!
The Hydraulic links don't seem the heaviest made and that is what lets ours down and I think it would struggle to lift our 4furrow rev plough and lug it about in a hill but for what we paid the tractor is pretty decent.
But our advice is to try one and see what you think.

Thanks, plenty said there, not to worried now and to be honest any tractor is going to be a vast improvement on what I have just now.... she does everything I ask, just looking at a newer tractor to have a major update and fewer repair bills. Will have a look at the 5100m's that the dealer has.

Morning, Like your idea, of the 6110m but just a bit on the large side, did look after I saw you post, I wont be stressing out any tractor really, mostly light work.

Bought a 5100r new in 2010 and I like it. It’s not been any trouble, done about 4500hrs with it. Might feel a bit underpowered though with heavy loads.

Old 5r is not bad at all,but if compare 2010 5r to new 5r,they are totally different tractors.
New 5r is not bad if you drive it,but reliability issues are real.

Hello, dragging this thread up again, looking at a 5100r with a loader, 2013 with 6000 hrs. Does anyone have any more experience of this vintage? There are some mixed reviews further upthread. It would be replacing a 2850, and would need to do a couple of thousand mini hesstons, (unless I get cubicles built) , but only a few miles, and on flat land. Am unsure whether it has quite the Welly required, and worried about the reliability of the electrics.
Thanks in advance.
