Kockerling Ultima?

Last week my neighbour approached me to see if I was interested in renting his ground off him, which I am but if I do I need to increase my drilling capacity, so I need a drill ASAP.
He has 600 acres and so do I.
I’ve been strip til drilling for about 10 years now and he has been min tilling, I think to get the output with a sensibly sized tractor in should be looking at a 6m direct drill.
I’ve seen a Kockerling Ultima advertised and don’t know anything about them, can anyone shed any light on them please.
Anything else out there I should be looking at which is available?
I would also like it to apply fert too

good time to go to the next step and move to zerotill ? Could probably still cope at 3 or 4m then ?

A kockerling ultima is a very good drill. But it is not a out and out direct drill.( but very capable of sowing direct into stubble).
Being a tined drill designed to work at speed it moves a lot of soil.
It has great contour following and with the pre press rollers, it rolls the seed bed first before placing the seed.
Rolling after it is not usually necessary as it leaves a very firm seed bed.
It excels in extreme conditions and there is very few situations that would stop it working.
There are french companies that do low disturbance conversions for it of various configurations.
They are very easy to operate, no adjustment to fiddle with just one hydraulic pressure to change seed depth.
Very cheap to run

We have been testing the low disturbance Metcalfe points on the Ultima and they do work very well. You have to cut a bit of the bottom of the drill leg off to get the Metcalfe conversion kit to fit.

The low disturbance Points turn the Ultima into a very good direct drill, with good contour following, the press wheels in front of every point means drilling into high trash residue is not a issue and with the STS roller the slot is closed and consolidated very well.

We still have a bit of testing left to do but looks like the Metcalfe point will be a very good combination.

I am looking for feedback on the Metclalf point or other narrow points on the Ultima.

I do have a simple set up with Kockerling seed tubes and Agri France Carbure points, but I found that the seed placement is not accurate.

Does anybody have an opinion on these ?

What kind of seed tubes are you running? We are using the AFC points aswell, but we changed that standard seed tube to a more narrow one coming from the Koeckerling Jockey. I am very happy with the seed placement.

I think that the vertical attack of the point moves too much soil away from the furrow. So when drilling in DD I have to go deeper to have enough soil.

But I discover that I was running the fan too high. The book says 3000rpm but 2400 is enough. Do you use cyclone to take off the air ?
I maybe drilling too fast also, 9kmh in DD. I'm not keen on drilling at 6 with a 3m

We are not using any cyclones. Rpm is at about 2.600 but we do have a 6 m machine that is a bit different than the 3 m version I think.

I am going 8 - 9 kmh aswell, on our loamy sands this is working pretty good.
