Why not a surveyors level? Very accurate and can do long distance. The type that you look through and somebody holds a measuring staff at the other end to get a reading.

A laser level with gradients on the x and y axis would be very handy. Any recommendations?

Hi,

Your best option would be a model like the Spectra LL300N Premium Kit. Sadly this site hates us posting links to products so hopefully, you can pull it up via google.

Spectra is a premium brand and competes directly with the other two premium brands, Leica and Topcon.

The Spectra LL300N is a fully self-levelling red beam rotary laser which levels on the horizontal. It is accurate to ±2.2 mm at 30 m, range of 500m, has an IP rating of IP66 (Dust tight / Protected against powerful jets of water) and a 5 year warranty. It is rechargeable but can also run on alkaline batteries. It's also incredibly simple and straightforward to operate.

In order for you to set slopes and gradients in both the X & Y axis (dual grade) you would also need to add the RC601 Remote control to the kit. Without the remote, the laser can only do horizontal levelling.

At the time of writing, including adding the RC601 for Gradients and Slopes the cost is £713.99 inc vat.

put up a barn so square the and levelling the footing

Hi,

We are not Dewalt dealers but this type of product would not have been my first recommendation.

This type of product, a cross line and static dots up / down (plumb line) left, right and front) would typically be used by interior trades (shop fitters etc..) and if used outside would often be purchased by automatic gate installers.

It could in theory be used for the base of a barn and footings, but I think you are making it very hard for yourself and there are more suitable products that would allow you a much large scope for other projects.

As I say we are not Dewalt Dealers but if you prefer Dewalt over other brands something like the Dewalt DW089 with the DE0892 Detector would be more flexible. As this would give you a 360 horizontal datum and a simultaneous left to right / front to back 90deg squaring. It also puts a cross on the floor and if inside the intersection point of the two verticals on the ceiling gives you a plumb line.

This would make it really simple to easily square off the base for the barn and set the horizontal datum.

You have to buy the DE0892 detector with it because without it you cannot see the beam outside.

Hope this helps.

Customer: What have you got for £150 inc vat and delivery?
Supplier: Sadly as all of our lasers are for trade use and have to be of a certain accuracy and specification we do not have any products at that price point I am afraid to say.
Customer: Well it's only for 1 house?
Supplier: As I say, sadly the budget wouldn't be sufficient for our products.
Customer: Ok. thank you. I will just use my trusty 2ft spirit level

Been using a Red line DeWalt outside.....dull day or dusky you can see the line no bother...a Green laser would be better.
Using a rigid steel metre long rule seemed to show the line when light levels are difficult.
Bright midday midsummer would challenge it. But it is possible without receiver.
No substitute for a Rotary level though.
Depends on the budget...
Screwfix were doing a Green line laser with a receiver for about £200...
Considering a good quality 2mtr spirit level would be the top side of £50 probably not a bad deal

Yes, as you say using a Laser Level without a Detector / Receiver is definitely possible when it's dusk or perhaps a building is casting a shadow over the worksite. Especially when you use something to enhance the beam i.e a metal rule / white painted roofing timber or similar.

Obviously our advice comes from a commercial application standpoint that the kit must be useable whether it's sold to Dubai or Dudley and able to work throughout the working day. But of course budget plays a huge part and as such sometimes compromises have to be made.

If accuracy is key then a laser level is always the way to go.
As an example the best premium German spirit level would typically have an accuracy of +/- 15mm @ 30 metres where as a mid-range cross line laser level would typically have an accuracy of between +/- 6mm & 9mm @ 30 metres and a rotary would typically be between +/- 1.5mm & 3mm @ 30 metres for trade lasers. Some DIY models are worse at around 6mm @ 30m but you get the idea.
