Late harvest

Agronomist looking at a bit of winter milling wheat today to time up for milky ripe protein N - 2 weeks off yet apparently which I would suggest makes august harvest unlikely?

No OSR to cut - cant see us dong much if anything until mid-August? Big rea of Linseed juts getting final N so that could be October ............. what a fun year 2020 is turning into !

Anyone else similar with these very late drilled wheat crops ?

Its only in the last couple of years wheat has been started mid August round here. Its normally August bank holiday

Are you planting any Osr? Thought previously you have said you like Osr planted by mid August- could be tricky this year

I personally think our Harvest will be slightly earlier than usual- which is the best thing to happen this year, as it means I don’t have to look at crops for too much longer.

Hope to start rape next week. Expect some Extase to be ready around 25th July.

Skyfall turning on lightish land, no OSR or winter barley, will be cutting wheats in July.

Started Skyfall Aug 1st last year. 15.5% mc

A typical year we wouldn't start wheat until bank holiday weekend. Going to be gash this year as everyone will want their barley cut on the same day.

That being said we may be on spring oats before that.

the earliest year I can remember finishing harvest was the year moisture went down from 16 to 15% finished before the ebor and b& h. I seem to recall as a lad would go with family and then start ww the day after ,twas I think on a wed then, cant ever remember cutting wheat in july and not that often wb.This last few years have oft finished in aug albeit last few days, which pleases mrs 4 course as her birthday is 3/9 but many is the year weve been around the 10th sept and occasionally beyond .Though can only once remember combining ww in oct due to a horrendously wet harvest must have been around 30 yrs ago.The timing now is more due to much upgraded combine capacity . This year however reckon we will be combining wb in late july and sp barley in aug along with ww but some of that which was sown in feb cant see being cut before september so harvest whilst usually only taking 10 -12 full days in 3 weeks could last nearly 8

Talking about subject today and reckon could be finished mid August! Winter barley, osr, autumn sown wheat, peas, spring barley, Feb sown spring wheat.

In an ordinary year - and we were up together - we could be 2/3 the way through harvest by the end of July with WB and OSR. All square bales of barley in the shed as well and OSR off to the store.

Combine won't move til August and we will be v busy when it all comes together.
And we have had to buy some Wheat straw so we will be following two combines

We are often later with wheat, as ours is mostly planted after maize or potatoes.
This year we have Rye, which was harvested today for AD, OSR to be sprayed next week , spring barley a long way off, but winter barley that will be probably the earliest we’ve ever done, as some of it is nearly ready. Maybe even later next week.

what a fun year 2020 is turning into !

Been all through a couple of fields of WB today, pulling wild oats.

Amazingly, it's all far greener now than it was three weeks ago when going through same fields second time.

Secondary tillering, grasses and blw all only to be expected after the recent rain.

But even the main tillers, straw and the grain, seem to be so much greener, too.

Been on a loop from s. Staffs up to south Lincs today and back via Rutland, mid Leics, s Derby’s. A lot more fallow ground than I expected, didn’t see a decent looking crop of OSR at all, all seemed very poor from the road. Some w barley not far off, but a lot of very green wheat of variable quality that looks as if it will be pretty late like ours.

Not a very encouraging picture at all I’m afraid.

Osr will probably be sprayed off next week leading a start from the 20th which is fairly typical here, SB looks like early August and Wheat's still very green, so the later part of August which is again fairly typical.
Winter Beans may well be in August which has only happened in '18 previously, hopefully only S OSR to cut in September

no OSR here again for the foreseeable

biggest problem for us will be getting cover crops in early enough to be worthwhile, I’ve held off ordering seed as a result

that would be our usual kind of start date, looking at social media the East of the UK is like looking at a different country this year .......... I think I know how Scottish farmers feel normally now !

Calm yourself Clive up here winter barley be at least 5 weeks away and the bulk of the spring barley and oats won’t start until first week September other than the earliest farms maybe last days August.
So yeah Scotland is later and up this far north and into Orkney October spring barley is normal and we normally get it all cut and straw bales.

April drilled spring wheat exploded after the recent rains and has a lot of tillers will be late Sept i think . My November drilled w wheat will be the last quarter of august along with the s barley . Recent rains along with cooler temps have made the possibility of an ultra early harvest more remote .
