Level Playing field.

Was talking to a friend, last week who has a farming operation in Poland, a member of the EU.He told me they still use Cruiser (neonics) on OSR and can still use Dursban. These resulting crops can be imported into the UK,apparently the same applies with Canadian Canola.
We always seem to be disadvantaged as a Nation with no level playing field.

Leaving aside the fact that there are probably a dozen things that UK farms have that they don't (maybe such things as favourable IHT treatment and no business rates/local taxes on farms). The EU is clamping down anyway

Is your friend envious of anything we have that's not available to him? I'm sure there must be something.
No he's not envious, the farm is just another investment.I was just trying to highlight how different legislation is in Europe as well as throughout the World.I can't think of much Poland would be envious of,massive investment by the EU,big subsidies in farming and great improvements being made to the country's infrastructure although,I admit, they have a lot of catching up to do.He even had a new 450hp JD and the government paid for half.

People have spend more than £450k on AD plants in the UK. They expect various levies and tax breaks not only to pay for all of the asset but also provide “a return on capital”. Plenty of government help here if you look.

The Agricultural associations in Poland appealed to the Farm Minister to get the derogation to use Neonics (Cruiser etc) and it was for about 70% of the area I think. I somehow think we would have a harder time persuading our farm minister to do the same thing. My colleagues over there said it was very easy to get the support!

No such thing as a level playing field never has been or will be. Parts of America just had snow on standing corn, we are half drowned and meanwhile in Oz parts are suffering from a never ending drought.

Those are natural weather events. The thread referred to the availability of a pesticide not natural geographic weather issues. The availability of a pesticide is a political issue entirely under human control.

While we import clothes made in sweat shops or work houses in other parts of the world I can’t see people being too bothered about a bit of seed dressing.

now if round up was banned for health reasons (consumer) and still being imported on food we eat I think we could fight that .

That is true but then UK farmers do not face the same weed or disease or pest pressures, ours will be different to those faced in other parts of the world. The Canadians might have dursban but Americans are not allowed 3C and for them wheat going flat is nearly what they expect. How often do you see endless wheat fields all flat in the UK?

They might get deep frosts in the US that kill slugs outright but they still have some very nasty pest and weed issues that even our banned chemistry won't control. A lot of them can never hope to grow cool season grasses and beet or potatoes as we do as there just isnt the rain or they get obliterated by endemic pests there.

Read posts from farmers around the world, they are all complaining about the exact same things we are.

You are a politician, Yes? Managed to write 300 words of waffle without addressing what I said but all the time deflecting the issue. Hey ho.
