Strip them and clean the disc and pads up with the flappy disc grinder, then adjust up to suit, they will still be crap but they will work better.
Did the same on my 384 but over winter they have rusted again and are binding

You might need bigger balls to tackle infamous Leyland brakes! Don't be afraid to shorten the bottom hex sets on the covers and get yourself a 19mm box spanner/chainsaw plug spanner too. Fight the covers off and pull a disc off the splines. Free and spread the linkage to withdraw the expander with it's springs and balls, where dust covers keep the muck in. Second disc then comes out.

Are they the same as Nuffields?.. if so they didnt really work when new.
Just the same from the 10/60 onward... Absolutely not fit for purpose! The earlier shoe and drum in the Universals and 4/60 was much better except there was nothing to adjust the shoes closer to the drum as they wore. The pedal rods could be adjusted, which only determined the pedal height.Have to build up the ends of the shoes with a welder as the lining wears down but the brakes did work...well sort of!

Were brilliant brakes on my Nuff 4/60 in the day, come to end of field, knock throttle off a bit, lift triple k`s up stamp on one pedal. sin round on that wheel drop triple k off you go. Not like now , 5mins to shuffle around. NO, i would not go back to the good old days :) cannot find a smiley with rose tinted glasses,

The problem is that folks don't clean, adjust and lubricate the brake linkages often enough - which leads to slop in the bushes and clevis pins. If you've got any slop or a drum full of dust and seized expanders - then they wont work well. If you go through the braking system and adjust to spec then you can get an acceptable braking system. You might need to spend a few quid on them - but all parts are available. They will never be as good as wet brakes - but you can make them work.
