Good Afternoon folks, We have just been told by our landlord (National Trust) that they will not be renewing our tenancy as they want to "Do something other than farming with the land" So after building a very successful farm business over 25 years we are going to have to move. We will be looking for a farm on a FBT with a minimum of 120 acres. Would appreciate any pointers as to where to start to look for a future tenancy? We are happy to move anywhere in the UK as the main income generating aspect of the business can be relocated. Cheers

Are you a member of the TFA? They post tenancy opportunities on their website but I think you have to be a member to access them

I wonder whether NT have changed their mind after March 25th?
Let’s hope they come crawling back to you in the next few days. It might be an opportunity to improve your tenancy agreement.

NT get special access to tax payer funds for rewilding whole farms/ estates that ordinary farmers cannot apply to.

About 18 months ago the NT got given 1 million of tax payers Money to rewild an estate on Exmoor they own, worked out at about £400 an acre!

You went further than us then. We walked a NT farm and could see lots of possibilities then, after a brief chat with the NT guys that were in charge, turned round and walked off the yard.

thats similar -saw a mint set up that could of supported a family and a worker - 80 sucklers and 500 ewes, good soil and even unused grazing right.
the nt bods wanted 20 rare breed cows and 200 sheep and lots of wide margins - breed choices designed to ruin you.... their understanding of the land was beyond words terrible and they wanted engagement with the locals who were using the farm as a dog toilet. the farm is now turning into rushes and is undergrazed so the grass is getting bracken popping up.

unfortunatly if the fbt is ending naturally then staying put basically removes all your avenues.

Have you gone above the local bods heads and contacted the higher ups? Trying to argue the case for maybe some form of Regenerative ag?
Sadly i dont think their is a future for conventional livestock units in the NT especially in areas where they want more wildlife - but maybe pitching farming as part of the solution not the problem is a goer? (Its worked for me with one institutional investor landlord).

The issue is the NT is operating based on what their members and more importantly, the self appointed "experts" (who generally don't actually understand the real world beyond a theory written down) say. You need to make the reality fit their narrative.

They own the land which is always the problem.

Obviously you'd need to take professional advice but, if you haven't really got a leg to stand on, you'd have to balance fighting it with looking like the sort of tenant a prospective future landlord wouldn't want.

This all sounds so familiar. Without sounding like a glass half empty merchant there is very little you can do except screw every penny you can out of them before you leave. Do you have tenants improvements and fixtures as they will pay you well for them if you have the right agent negotiating for you.
You can speak to your MP and anyone who is going to make the members aware of what the NT are up to on a national scale. None of this is personal but it is wrecking families livelihoods and preventing the next generation an opportunity to farm. Meanwhile they are destroying agricultural holdings which have been there for centuries. A lot more needs to be brought to the medias attention but I fear the media are too much in the pocket of woke organisations like the NT to do anything.
As I have said before get a good agent.

The USA immigration service offers opportunities to get visas fast tracked for skills they consider in short supply, "Sheepherder" is still on the list I believe.
