Maize 2019

Have you seen anyone doing it over there? Generally they do it at V6. Seen it done here but we can get more variability due to drought. Causing uneven stand or it just dies.

Its very touch and go. Many maize herbicides leave a residue in the soil that will hammer seed that tries to grow in it. Also you have a very aggressive maize crop which often grows by the foot in hot sun, along with very hot and dry conditions at ground level which is not ideal for newly establishing grasses.

Played with it a bit but found getting grass in after maize is a doddle unless its a very wet autumn. Once forager is gone, light rip with sumo or similar then powerharrow to level and on with grass box harrow. Dont roll so as to let rain percolate in.

Yes have seen good takes of IRG
Problem we have us some of the maize land is rented short term where the landowner wants to graze sheep afterwards
Plus it would help, give traction as well as preventing soil erosion

We tried it 10 years ago or so, spread it with till spreader when the maize was about knee high, found that it did where the maize didnt and vice versa

Wouldnt worry about it, cattle will trample them in and plough in spring again

Does the ground getting torn up like that not have an adverse impact on next years crop? I saw some horrendous ruts round Limavady the other day. They had cut the headland then left the middle to harvest when weather improves but it looked awful.

Never seen it making much difference, just dont plough it in spring til rest of field is sowed or else plough it and plough it again before sowing

Think stable comes from Cumbria rather than US

I myself am clearly a big fan of the plastic system, with all the mess being made this year and the added cost of grass seed etc will more people be looking to plastic?

Its over 8 weeks ago we chopped ours and i live in probably the most marginal area on this thread, the cost isnt that outlandish when you take into account its gets less fertiliser, spray goes on with the drill and i believe you get a better feed?

How much per acre was plastic?

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
