Maize harvest 2018

We grow an early maturing variety (13). Plaster it with a ridiculous amount of FYM and drill as soon as the soil has got some warmth to it (usually early May for us)

Generally will be able to cut by first or second week in October. Hope to be done in September this year though.

Several neighbours at similar height also growing it successfully. Only year I've had a bad crop was 2012 which if you recall was like a monsoon all summer.

Wind has caused it to grow a bit wonky couple of years but with little effect to overall outcome.

How can you get it growing that high up?

Started yesterday and was expecting the worse!!
Started on KWS Keops which desperately needed cutting, as dying off quick. It was on our best ground which looked amazing early, but droughts ever since. 85ac. Av 33.6%DM 15.8t/ac. Happy!

Followed on to 50ac Aasgard, looked bad early(on a bank as well) but clay soil better in drought and beat lighter soils. Av. 33.1%DM 16.5t/ac.

Finished day on another LG variety on neighbouring farmer growing for us. Looked ok early but terrible since. About 4ft tall!! I think will struggle to hit 10t.

All DM’s done using microwave, oven and JD HarvestLab.

Hoping to average 15t as both good and bad left to do!

We've done the first field last night, weighed trailers and counted them off, unfortunately quite a lot has lodged the night before in the heavy rain so we are leaving more behind than i would like.

Its done 15.5t then i microwaved it this morning and got 38.3dm so 5.9t dm / acre.

All in and done, one field a LOT had gone done its a real mess and we will struggle to plough it, that field only did 12.2t/acre.

The best did 18.7t at 37.1% Dm so 6.9t/dm

Overall really pleased and hope it feeds out well.

Im not sure il tell you after Christmas, dry maize isnt something we know much about in Cumbria, we grew maize years ago for a 10 year spell and never got it ripe, never hit 30dm, so were determined this year to get a ripw dry crop.

Time will tell its a learning curve for us.
