Manitou MRT 1540 roto outriggers not retracting.

Dear reader,

In order to help me with building an extension, I figured I needed something to help me lift materials in place and have just bought me an old Manitou MRT 1540 roto.
The (private) seller stated the machine was in good working order, but the old lady is giving me some grief and I could sure use a bit of help. Andrew Cross (ACE) already was kind enough to help me with the coolant leak and shot water pump issues, but I cannot keep bothering him all the time, hence my posting here.

When I bought the machine, the seller was already struggling with getting the machine to retract the outriggers. His explanation was that it needed everything to be levelled to work, and after playing a bit with boom up and down, he indeed managed to get the outriggers to lift.

I am now stuck with the outriggers down, and playing with the boom up and down does not get me out of trouble.

I suspect the issue is that the machine has a number of safeties which block the outriggers from being retracted, but it would help me a lot to know what they are to check the corresponding limit switches.

Maybe the PAT also directly interferes with outrigger retraction. Turning the PAT override key to 0 does not solve the issue, but I do not know if turning the PAT override key is also for the outriggers.

Any insights, help on what could block outrigger retraction on a Manitou would be greatly appreciated.

Wishing you a nice day,

Marc

You won't find anyone in this forum that knows about manitou Roto machines as its mostly all agricultural in here.

Tbh very few manitou dealers know anything about roto machines aswell! Will only be a select few of the ones big in to construction industry that would ever see them.

Only time I have ever seen one in person was walking past one while at manitou UK training course over 20years ago🫣

It will have safety cut outs on the legs for sure, so I would expect limit switches at back of boom to measure height and boom extension.

It's also probably got them on the the roto aswell since they may not want you to lift legs untill machine is back to it's driving position? But I'm just guessing.

Dear Andrew,

You might only have seen one of these 20 years ago, but as always, you are spot on.
There is a sliding pin with a proximity sensor on the boom extension which detects boom fully retracted and which seems to be acting as a safety blocking outrigger retraction when the boom is not fully in. I adjusted the sensor a bit closer to the pin, and with the boom fully retracted, and the boom in the down position, the outriggers retraction system came back to life.
For future reference:
To retract the outriggers, it seems to require the boom to be down, and the boom to be fully retracted.
The turret position does not seem to matter.
I am a bit surprised it needs boom down, because you could approach something with the boom lifted to clear it, put down the outriggers once you are next to the object and then be unable to retract the outriggers because you cannot lower the boom with the object in front of you. I suppose in that case, you would need to rotate the turret to allow the boom to be lowered over the back or the side of the machine which would explain there no outrigger retraction blockage with rotated turret.
I think it uses the boom angle from the PAT system, and expected the PAT bypass key to allow outrigger retraction with boom lifted, but that does not seem to be the case.

So, again, many thanks Andrew for all your kind help, and problem sorted.

On to the next issue……

Just a correction of my previous post should someone be looking for information on the MRT 1540.

Only boom retraction and minimal boom angle lift block the outrigger retraction through two proximity switches mounted on the boom end.
The PAT system boom angle detector does indeed not interfere with outrigger retraction
I was wrong in saying that lifting the boom blocks outrigger retraction. It does on my machine, but it seems something is rigged the wrong way round on my machine and it block above a certain angle where it should do when below a certain boom angle.
Correctly set up, the machine does not allow outrigger retraction unless the boom is still lifted to at least 1 m height. The purpose of blocking the outrigger retraction when the boom angle is too low is to prevent that the man carrying basket or tools hit the ground when retracting the outriggers and dropping down the machine.

Maybe this is of help to someone, some day.

Kind regards,
Marc
